Summary
All Steve wants for the 2023 baseball season is for the media to leave him alone for once. His reputation is still suffering after he was caught last season in a very compromising position with one of his teammates, and he just wants to lay low and play a good season. A trip to the World Series wouldn’t hurt either.
A voice from his past has other plans, though.
Eddie hasn’t been able to forget what the two of them had together when they were in high school, or his promise to Steve when they parted ways the summer after senior year: Someday I’ll write a whole album for you. It’s been a decade, and all the pieces are in place for Eddie to finally make good on that promise.
Steve is in for a roller coaster of a season.

“Hey newbie. Ever worked in a bar before?” the guy asks with an easy smile. Steve snaps his eyes up to meet his, and shit they’re pretty. The greeting would be charming from anyone else, perhaps even from the guy himself if he’d not overheard the exchange moments before, but Steve’s insides curl at the condescension.
“Yeah. For about five years. Thanks. And my name’s Steve,” he responds, voice clipped. He yanks at the ties of his apron, knotting the bow just a little tighter than is comfortable. He’ll have to adjust it later, but the man’s dark eyes are roaming over him like he’s something edible, and there’s no way Steve’s going to give any indication whatsoever that he’s prey.
“Nice to meet you, Steve. I’m Eddie.”
Steve can’t prevent the way his face scrunches in confusion, because surely not. There’s no way that this is the Eddie. Sure, he’s not exactly hard on the eyes, but from the little Steve’s experienced of him so far, he seems like a major ass. The way Bridget had hyped him up, anyone would think fucking Jon Bon Jovi worked here.

Summary
Steve was a great wingman. So great, in fact, that after traveling up to Chicago for the weekend as moral support for Robin’s first college crush, it took all of an hour and a couple of wine coolers at a party near campus to hook her up with the redhead from her language lab. Thankfully, Steve knew he was a great wingman, plus it was a good three-hour drive just to get to the city in the first place, so he had the foresight not make the trip alone. All of which was why he was now nursing beers with Eddie Munson on the back porch of a random party house in Hyde Park, arguing about Mr. Mister.
Steve brings Eddie along to visit Robin at college in Chicago, and one hook-up, one ex, and one punch later the two of them are left killing time wandering the streets of Hyde Park, getting to really know each other for maybe the first time.

“Ground rules,” Steve says as he pushes the door open and turns to face him, walking backwards into his hallway. The dealer is prowling him, stalking towards him, biting his bottom lip.
“One, do not fucking kiss me,” Steve says, clicking on a lamp. The guy nods, taking off his jacket, throwing it on the floor as he stares at his mouth while he talks. “Two, this is a one time thing.”
The guy laughs, grabs onto Steve’s wrists, “that’s not going to be a problem.” “Because once you have me, you’ll want me again,” Steve oozes confidence, all babygirl and bratty. It’s so easy for him to be like this.
He scoffs, “oh please. Who do you think you are? Really?”
He tightens his grip on his wrists and pushes him against the wall. Fuck, okay, it’s going to happen right here.
Or
Steve sleeps around with low expectations and zero intentions for it ever meaning more. Until he meets a guy who makes him want to break all his own rules.

A spatula from the cup of utensils next to the stove floats into the air, hangs there a second, and then smacks him directly on the forehead.
“Ow! Fuck, okay. I guess that’s a yes. Are you haunting my house or me specifically?” Him, it’s definitely him, but it doesn’t hurt to have confirmation.
The spatula waggles in his direction, and then smacks him in the head again.
“Fuck! You can tell me things without violence, you know!” The cold feeling he associates with it (her) goes through him again, and it feels like laughter. “Are you…is it…is it Barb? Are you Barb?”
There’s a long moment of silence—or, well, it’s all been silence, but a long moment in which nothing happens—and then the spatula goes hurtling through the air like it’s being thrown and smacks him in the eye, before falling to the ground.

Summary
Without consciously deciding to, Steve reaches out and gently cups Eddie’s cheek, the rings he wears to keep his promise to Eddie gently pressing into their rightful owner’s skin. Steve thumbs away leftover slime crusted below Eddie’s eye before bending over to kiss his forehead. When Steve was a kid and his parents were still around, his mom used to call forehead kisses fairy kisses. Magic, guaranteed to cure any illness or injury. And sure, Steve is old enough to not believe in fairies anymore but there’s a certain magic to touch that he does still believe in.
If anyone were to walk in and ask why he holds Eddie’s hand, unconscious and limp in his own, that’s what he’ll tell them.
