    Expect all sorts of crazy rockstar stuff in there, ya know: groupies, drugs, destruction of private property, lots of sex, inner-band conflict, interviews, stage fights…

    “Hello Centaurs Nation,” the bright and bubbly voice of Ilya Rozanov spills out from the phone speaker, “I am Ilya Rozanov and I am very excited to join team for upcoming season!” He pauses, wielding his trademark wide, slightly lopsided grin like a media trained superweapon. “Today is only my second day on team, but day three of Centaurs Development Camp. As you know, Ottawa got second overall pick. Is very exciting, I have been watching all the Luca Haas clips. He will be something special, I know this.”

    There's a quiet jingle of car keys. He’d shot the video with his phone propped against the steering wheel of what appeared to be a Land Rover, and the video comes to a close as he turns over the ignition. “Anyway, I have places to be, so I will be seeing you all very soon. Bye-bye!” He offers a jaunty salute before his face smooths out and he focuses on finding the little button to end the recording.

    (Alternatively: Ilya Rozanov signs with the Ottawa Centaurs on July 1, 2018. It is, to some degree, a reckoning.)

    Or: Ilya Rozanov is sure he's being catfished- why would the real Shane Hollander be on Grindr, talking to random university of Ottawa students? But the more he talks to Wayne, the more he starts to like him, and the more he wishes Wayne would just come clean so they can finally be together.

    A second, then a blur. Ilya knocking over one of the kitchen island stools to engulf Shane. His shaking frame holding Shane so tight, Shane felt himself shaking back. He could only hold on back, just as tightly.
    “Please.” Came the strangled voice by his left ear. “Please, tell me.”
    And who was Shane to ever deny a wish of Ilya Rozanov.
    “I’m signing to Ottawa. Tomorrow. If you would want to come with.”
    And then Ilya was shoving him back, holding him close to his face. “Of course. I drive. Of course I come.”
    Or
    Shane, fed up with Montreal, signs to Ottawa before their relationship is revealed. While he doesn't plan on keeping that a secret for long, he asks Ilya to let him get to know the team first, before they come out. To maybe have a normal season. Meanwhile, the rest of the Centaurs are going crazy trying to figure out what is going on between their captain and Shane Hollander and why they keep showing up in the same car??

    “Okay,” Hollander says, voice cracking.

    He doesn’t say anything else. The air’s so heavy around them that it feels like being in the middle of a scrum, the weight and heat of all those bodies pressing down on you. Danger always feels like hockey; it’s the most dangerous thing Ilya knows, except for this. Everything dangerous in his life involves men’s bodies and just how close he can get to them. Closer than he probably should.

    A year after mysteriously dropping out of the 2009 draft, Shane Hollander is signed by the Boston Raiders, right behind Ilya Rozanov. Having the two biggest stars in the league on the same line is great for Boston — but playing alongside their worst rival was never exactly in Shane or Ilya's plans. Especially not when staying away from each other starts to feel just as impossible as getting along.

    Objectively, this used to be true. Nowadays Shane has many, many plans, between his nightly plans to look at Ilya’s penis through Skype and his various long-term plans laid out helpfully in his notebook, Canva (For Ilya’s sake. He is a visual learner), and more recently, Excel. Shane loves that excel sheet. He’s colour coded it.

     

    In 2017, Shane Hollander spirals and proposes to his boyfriend of 4 days (or 7 years, or 9 years, or not his boyfriend at all, depending on how you look at it), which leads to a lot of plans, weird theories in the Montreal Voyageur locker room, some Twitter drama, and Ilya Rozanov entering his WAG era.

    Now Shane, captain of the Ottawa Centaurs, is a single dad to four-year-old Ollie, and good at pretending he doesn’t think about the man he lost when they were younger and terrified of the fallout of being caught. Then one chance meeting turns into drinks, lingering looks, old feelings, and suddenly Ilya Rozanov is everywhere again.

    Some things, it turns out, never really leave you.

    As Shane and Ilya fall back into each other’s lives - and into something softer, steadier, and openly theirs this time — they realise maybe they’re finally ready for the life they used to dream about.
