"Suffering didn't end when it was convenient." A safehouse fic that foregrounds the struggles of health and care and anxiety that plague Jon and Martin in this situation. Grounded and gentle and realistic. Beautiful rendition of Jon's POV on his relationship to the Eye, his ease at using his power to help, but his anxiety at what it can make him do.

He closes his eyes, allows himself a moment, just one.
“Can I live with it? Can I keep taking statements, taking all that fear and pain and feeding it to the beholding, not just until I can ‘quit’, but for the rest of my life?”

His triumph is short lived as he steps back and promptly trips over his own feet, falling backwards and taking the box with him. He hits the ground with a muffled thud, the box bouncing off his chest and sending papers flying everywhere.

Not sure what to say except I read this post-GO3 and it set me right back to the soft, resigned, devastating and comforting anguish of TMA S4. Jon's voice might be the most in-character I've seen in a s4 fic, his wry tenacity and self-depreciation mingled with hopeless passive suicidality. I can hear his voice like it's straight from an episode.

Delusions. Jon had been dealing with delusions since he was a child, around seven or eight. He would lay awake until two or three in the morning, staring at the window, chest heavy with the absolute certain knowledge that somebody was about to break in and kill him and his grandmother. He had tried to warn her—of course he had tried to warn her—but she didn’t listen. So he would sit, tears in his eyes and stuffed rabbit clutched to his chest, waiting for the moment when somebody broke in with a knife.

“Have you got anywhere to stay?” Jon asks him, briskly. “Friends, acquaintances, maybe, who you could stay with…?”
Martin flushes, deeply. “I, I mean— n-no, not really,” he stammers, and then goes even redder. “Or, just, y’know not that I’d want to, to. Put in the middle of this. Put in danger of, of worms.”
“Ah,” Jon says, “No, of course, that makes sense.” Why drag anyone else into this mess? Seven people died during Prentiss’s initial hospitalization; the collateral damage of roping someone from outside the Institute into her orbit doesn’t bare thinking about. “In that case…” Jon feels like there’s some alternative solution, one he’s just not thinking of at the moment, but it evades him, and Martin needs somewhere safe to stay. “My couch is quite comfortable. You’re welcome to come and stay with me until you figure something else out.”
Martin is held hostage by Jane Prentiss for two weeks, and can't go back to his flat. Jon offers him a place to stay until Prentiss and her worms can be dealt with, and they can be sure he's safe.

Martin choked immediately on his drink, spitting out his straw to hack as Sasha mustered enough compassion to give him a few hearty whacks on the back. She didn't react as strongly, of course, just a quirked brow in Tim's direction before picking a chip off her plate.
"Why do you think he's even interested in having sex at all? Have you ever seen him even look at someone twice?"
"You both- you can't talk about that! He's our boss!" Martin sputtered, finally recovered enough to speak.

Martin’s voice crashed over the phones speaker, cutting Tim off in a whirlwind of blurry articulation. “Tim, thank god, I can’t find Jon and he isn’t answering and Jon always always picks up if I call him more than five times, I don’t know if he’s dead or–”
Tim pulled up short, hand moving instinctively to cover his ear and block out the London traffic. “Whoa, whoa Martin slow down.”
Martin did not.

As far as he knew, Tim had a pretty good idea of how the afternoon would play out - by no means did it involve one disappeared statement giver, a trip to the clinic, an impressive amount of secondhand pining and another one of those damn tapes.
