Katsuki hated to admit it, but that day scared him, and he changed, and not for the better. His mom became meaner, and rougher, and overall just made his life hell, so he became meaner to deal with it all. He snapped and snarled and threw punches at anyone who even looked at him wrong.
He was scared and pissed and just pissed for being scared. He was pissed at himself.
Izuku got the worst of it. He tried to be there for him, but Katsuki pushed him the furthest away in the most cruel ways he could think of to get Izuku to stay away.
Izuku would never stay away though, and Katsuki would owe Izuku everything for that.

Katsuki just wants to be good. Izuku is there to show her that she can be.

“I -” Zuko sighed, holding Sokka in his arms, “I still can’t tell if you like it.”
“You made me another meteor sword? Oh, you beautiful, resplendent man!” Sokka didn’t pull his gaze away to look at the sword on the table (even if it had fucking dragons carved into the metal-!!!!) but he could’ve mentioned the carvings if he wanted to. It would’ve made the compliment more unique.
“Well, not made- I didn’t make it -”
“Personally commissioned, yeah, yeah, whatever-” Sokka would not cry. He would not tempt fate. Never mind the fact that he’d teared up when he’d gotten a splinter in his pointer finger chopping wood two nights before-
“You didn’t,” Sokka murmured. “No way you actually did this. No, this is another dream.”
In which Sokka has a birthday and Zuko commissions a one-of-a-kind gift for him.

As much as Zuko tried to ignore it, he couldn't help but tear his eyes up to meet Sokka's gaze, and just as he often did before, he found himself short of breath and a little weak in the knees. Though today of all days, he felt if he looked, he'd never make it out of this hut by his own strength.

Sokka's grateful to have his father to lean upon, and during those times they're separated, he leans into ruthlessness.
Zuko is hearing and doing all the right things, one after another. His exile finally ends. His path is laid before him perfect and predictable. He should feel like a man walking upon a plush, flat carpet. Instead, his footing feels as treacherous as wet shale as he runs from choices he regrets, and toward choices he realizes he fears even more.

And yet, when he rounded the corner into a room that, he belatedly realised, was the Prince’s temporary bedroom at the Western Air Temple, that was exactly what he saw.
It seemed it was time for a talk with his son."Look, this started as Hakoda gives Sokka and Zuko the Talk (TM), and evolved into an exploration of masculinity, culture, fatherhood, and recovery from abuse. I honestly can't explain how. Enjoy!

The man stared for a long time. The smile he bore had been completely wiped clean as he studied the scarring. Zuko’s skin itched with anxiety at the odd attention he was given and shot a scowl at the warrior, startling him out of his thoughts. The man offered an apologetic yet awkward smile as he patted his chest and started to speak. It took Zuko a moment to realize that what was being said was a very horribly butchered attempt at Fire Nation formal language. A horrendous introduction.
“My name is Sokka, son of Chief Hakoda.” He introduced with what the savage may have thought was casual ease judging by the sideways smile and the warmth in his eyes. Then proceeded to ask, pointing at Zuko to get his meaning across. “Your name is Li, right?”
‘Okay so they don’t know who I am.’ Zuko didn’t let his sigh of relief show as he nodded slowly in confirmation.
Or
Zuko slips into the scouting party that is sent on a mission to gather intel on an Earth Kingdom encampment only to be ambushed by Water Tribe warriors and taken as a prisoner of war. Zuko finds himself masquerading as Private Li, the Fire Nation scout as he receives a one way trip to the South Pole.

Leo isn’t a baby, but it’s only been two weeks since he’s hatched and he’s still so small. Comparatively, that is, because Leo is the size of a large dog; draped over Nico’s legs; his tail wrapped around his left foot and whimpering, “Nico, Nico, Nico,” over and over.
He’s picked up speech surprisingly quickly—even the others have marvelled how quick he is to learn without anyone explicitly sitting him down and giving him a plethora of vocabulary to use in conversation, and yet for the past however many days, Leo’s favourite word has been “Nico.”
Nico won’t complain.
It sparks a fire, soft and warming in his chest, and makes their bond glow like coals in a hearth every time he hears Leo speak; like the sound of laughter compressed into a feeling, or the eagerness of a warm bath after a cold day.
Or the heat of his bonded draped over his chest, snout tucked under his chin and a gentle crooning whimper as the sky splits with a thunderous boom and he all but slams himself against Nico, paws burying into his shirt like he can claw out his innards and take shelter in his chest.Leo has begun to remember, but one thing he hasn’t is that he’s not scared of thunderstorms.
