Mikey whines like a puppy, folding himself in two, tangling his fingers up in loose, knotted curls and shaking his head. “No, no, no, no.”
Something in the apartment block next to them bursts with a gust of hot air and shattered glass, making Leo duck slightly.
Mikey doesn’t move.
“Kid, I’m so sorry.” It’s been a long time since he’d called Mikey that word. A long time since he’d started to outgrow it, among other things when everything had started to go south. “He’s gone, Mikey. There— there isn’t anything we can do now.”
He watches his little brother's whole frame shudder with the sob that wracks through him with the force of a bullet ripping through his middle.
His shoulders tremble. His voice, when it manages to slide out of him, is hoarse and thin. Almost like a whisper.
“I can’t. I can’t leave him, Leo. H-he, he needs me. I need him.”
Mikey had loved this boy in full, in a world that was running thin on it, this, he was sure, was his soulmate. He’d said it with such conviction before, in a whispered hush one night, making the star shapes form in his glittering eyes. This was Mikey’s person, cold, unmoving, claimed trapped beneath this beam they hadn’t the strength to move.

If Mikey thinks he can have a whole-ass secret boyfriend and get away with it, he’s got another thing coming. Not when he has three older brothers and an older sister who have been waiting their entire lives for this moment.

A collection of stories involving Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles (and sometimes Shadow) from the movies sharing some instincts, traits, and characteristics with their real-life counterparts (hedgehogs, foxes, and echidnas). These aren't necessarily in the same universe unless otherwise stated, but you can consider it however you want. Most of these stories are fluffy with minor angst due to their personalities and backstories, but there are a few that are legitimately angsty. Only hurt/comfort, tho. There will always be a happy ending or a promise of one.

Summary
Ever since he was six, Knuckles was fending for himself, which was hard enough without scavengers constantly trying to abduct him to be put in an arena for their own entertainment. It was even harder when all of his free time was spent searching for the last remaining member of the Owl Clan.
That decade was the most difficult part of his life, and now he had security, he had a family, but how was he supposed to get used to that when his entire life was spent just trying to survive another day?
He couldn’t.
Or
The darkness of the Wachowski’s attic reminds Knuckles of being captured.
This will make more sense if you have read the “Always Bet on Red” Pre-quill comic for the second movie, but you can definitely read this without having read the prequel comic.
