“I’m merely ensuring that you’re paying attention,” Ivan says, brushing away an eyelash from underneath his own eyelid. “Many great rulers lose their minds out of boredom, you know. It is a general’s duty to make sure that his king stays on his toes.”
“Is that why you marked down the rice by at least three percent?” Till asks, pinching Ivan’s calf. “I don’t think you need to worry so much about my mind. It sure can’t find a moment’s rest when you’re around.”
Ivan snorts, mouth crumpling. Till thinks of persimmons left to dry out under the sun, pruned with time. Such is the state of Ivan’s smile. “You flatter me, Your Highness. Indeed, it was merely from a place of duty.” A tinge of pink floods his cheeks. “However will you punish me for this overstep? Will it be the ropes or the chains? Or will it be straight to the dungeons this time?”

Ivan breathes a humorless laugh. "I don't know what it is you want from me."
Till furiously snaps back, "I want you to—" before cutting himself off. He takes a deep breath and relaxes his scrunched-up facial features before continuing, quieter. "I'm your best friend. I find you half passed out in some—fucked up garden that you've been coughing up for a year, and I'm freaking out because I don't know what's going on or—or if you'll be okay, and now that I know you're okay, the doctors are saying they can't let you go because you're too damn sick to be left alone!"
His lower lip quivers ever so slightly. Ivan, for his own sake, unfocuses his eyes until Till is only a shapeless blur of colors in the middle of a sea of hospital white.
"I'm your best friend," the blur repeats, breathlessly. "I want you to fucking say something to me."
Hanahaki disease is, quite famously, a condition born from love. Ivan is convinced that his case is the exception to this rule. And when each of his friends inevitably starts catching on to his quickly deteriorating health, everything goes spinning out of control.

"So, what do you need me to do?" Ivan asks, placing his chin on his arm. "Should I pose as I did for that soap advertisement? Lean back on my elbows against the pillows? Perhaps your classmates would enjoy such a visual? I understand that with your workload, dating opportunities are scarce, and I happen to know my looks are at least a little beyond passable to particularly desperate souls."
Till bites his bottom lip to keep from scowling. He would be damned before he allows any of his own classmates get such ideas about Ivan. Ivan's classmates are already a pain in the ass as is. Still, it is better if their fantasies stay limited to Ivan's polished exterior, devoid of any of the chips or cracks, such as the ones around his mouth, where his real joy lies.
If anyone ever found out the way Ivan likes to lick the bottom of the mug with the broken handle after drinking his chocolate milk, Till might just have to kill himself.

Summary
Gradually, the sweet scent of lilies fills the room. Sua can hear a pop of plastic as Mizi squeezes the shampoo bottle. Through black fringes, she sees Mizi pour the liquid between her fingers, lathering thoroughly before starting to rub it in between the partitions of Sua's hair.
Sua herself enjoys the smell slowly spreading over her scalp. Lilies are rather unassuming flowers. Large, but delicate. Most suitable to be gifted for planned special occasions, such as birthdays or anniversaries, rather than impromptu lavish displays of love. Sua, who has never quite felt as pompous as a rose, finds that such convenient and purposeful blooms suit her.
(Or: Mizi washes Sua's hair. Many other things, such as shame, wash away into the drain.)

When a homophobic jock from Ivan’s team threatens to out Mizi, her proposed solution is simple, fake-date Ivan to scare the jerk off. Till watches the entire shitshow with two conclusions in mind:
1. Ivan and Mizi were the two biggest morons on campus.
2. The only thing worse than their acting was that Ivan just had to "practice" for dates with Till.
