Maybe he shouldn’t have hit send. Maybe he should’ve just left things as they were. Maybe Rin would act the same toward him. No cold shoulder. No silence. No awkward, unsaid words hanging in the air between them.
It wasn’t as if Haru swore off technology, but it wasn’t like he appreciated it either. Why he felt brave enough to send a few, bold words into the unknown was beyond him. It was so out of character. Perhaps it was the distance, picking away at his volition day after day. Maybe it was because his loneliness reached a new devastating peak, wearing away his inhibitions like waves upon the sand. Maybe he just couldn’t hide his feelings from Rin a moment longer. Either way, Haru couldn’t take it back. The message had been sent and things were never going to be the same.
But it also didn’t mean he was giving up.

On their weekly outing, reserved for discussing worldly news while tucked in the corner of a quaint little coffee shop in a world that, to those deemed most dangerous, had ceased to exist the moment the Foundation cut off all indispensable resources, Haru and Rin quietly discuss a circulating rumor that has everyone seated within the four dilapidated walls intently eavesdropping.
Someone had reached New Tokyo and was sending news of a further invasion that very week; something that could easily change the fate of everyone left surviving within the decaying grid of Old Tokyo – if found true, of course. However, if it was something more, something devious, hiding behind the whispers of hope, it could be the tipping point that would ultimately lead to Old Tokyo’s final demise

The water spilled over his lips, pouring across his cracked skin and onto the sand below his feet. It tasted so good. He was so thirsty. Every cell in his dehydrated body was screaming for reprieve. The days had spanned into something uncountable, and with each passing of the merciless orb in the sky, Haru begged for forgiveness. Unsure of how long it’d been since he had anything to drink, Haru took another handful of water, bringing it to his lips with trembling hands.
“Drink to your heart’s desire,” Rin whispered, brushing a chilling hand across his cheek. “You’ll be with me soon.”
Haru didn’t hesitate. Cupping his hands once again, he dumped water into his mouth, his eyes closing to the wonderful feeling of something liquid pouring down his throat. When he opened them, the world was dark. Haru found the night sky above his head, the millions of stars welcoming him with open arms. He was alone, his body cold despite the lingering heat.
Swallowing dryly, the last ounce of breath escaped Haru’s lungs as he called out Rin’s name.
