He drives out to the valley oak where he buried Fuches, looking across the city as he puts a beignet in his mouth, and he thinks that the land can affect you in ways you didn't know. Maybe. You look out over a parking lot and there are the San Gabriel Mountains and they choke you like a circlet even though the rest of the land here is eerily flat, miles of washed-out gray concrete and heat. When he had landed here in 2017 there was some feeling of enormity, pneumatic pressure in the ears, Los Angeles a slight incline into a sinkhole full of yellow lights. Sometimes the sand that collects on his skin feels malignant and alive. Sometimes his body remembers the temperature of Ohio.
