"I—I promise I don't mean to yell, I just—" Grace tries to swallow the sob that is crawling out of his throat like a centipede, posed to run away at even the slightest touch of a human being. His next exhale is shaky. "I got— I thought you were—"
He covers his face with his hands. Constantly trying to tiptoe around the topic at hand when he desperately does not want to tell Rocky about how he was forced on this mission. How he didn't want to go, how he was willing to die on Earth with the rest of humanity instead of getting on that ship like the damn coward he is.
Doesn't want to tell Rocky what they did to him in order to get him on that spaceship.
Ryland Grace is keeping something from Adrian and Rocky. It's up to them to figure out what's wrong.

"Very," Rocky hums.
My throat tightens. "Does that mean there's something wrong? Are you sick?"
Rocky makes a gesture I usually interpret as "not exactly". "Not sick," he says. "But doctors still worry. When Eridian start to make fewer eggs, this usually means laying period of life is over soon. Rocky very young for this. Rocky supposed to be in ideal time of life for laying. Rocky younger than Adrian, even." He shifts on three of his feet. Already, my mind is racing ahead, wondering -- "Doctors told Rocky to ask Grace, is this radiation side effect, question?"

For three hours, he’s at the beach, takes off his socks and hikes Ilyukhina’s dress up, and stands in the water. He left the cane on the shore; it hurts to let his frame bear the brunt of gravity unsupported. The reliable tide, just cool enough to chill him a little, laps at his shins.
He closes his eyes and tries to forget about himself, the familiar ache in his joints and spine. Allows himself to imagine something else.
A different truth, a hypothetical, a thought exercise.
Rocky can't bear to lose Grace. But he can bear to watch Grace wither away from a sickness easily cured by Earth medicine even less.
Grace has to make another choice.
Or: After thirteen years on Erid, Grace leaves his true home for Earth. Eva Stratt lives to see him return. Earth takes note of the changes.

My arm hangs limply by my side as Rocky takes my hand into his, examining it closely. He pulls my fingers apart, then wraps his hand around each of them, one after the other.
“What’chu doing, bud?”
He looks up at me, making a noise that I recognize as an idea brewing in his brain. “I will make rings,” he says.
“What?” I ask. And again, as my brain truly catches up with the meaning of what he’s said: “Wait, sorry, what?”
Rocky releases my hand, straightening like a man on a mission. “You say rings mean staying together forever. I make rings for us. So we stay together. Like last-finger-promise.”
