Ilya, despite himself, got curious. “What?”
“Helpless, I guess,” Shane said, after a moment. “Or I felt helpless. You weren’t talking to me, we don’t really know any of the same people, I was relying on podcasts and articles to answer my questions. And after a while there stopped being new podcasts and articles, but I still had so many questions. I hated it. I hated it so much. I was having nightmares, that summer.”
Ilya turned to him abruptly, slightly horrified. “Hollander, I—”
“I’m not trying to make you feel bad,” Shane said. “I’m just trying to explain. I don’t like when you act like I’m doing you this huge favor, like you have to make it up to me. I want to do this. If I wasn’t doing this I’d be losing my mind. I had been losing my mind.”
“Hollander,” Ilya said again, and sighed. “I think maybe you are still losing your mind.”

“Ever,” Shane repeats, accurately sensing Ilya might not fully be able to believe him. “You’re never going to lose me.”
Maybe Ilya needs to hear it, again and again. Maybe it’s what he’s needed to hear for a while. That all the other things that come along with who they are are worth giving up before him. Because that’s what Shane is saying, right? At least, Ilya thinks. He hopes. He has to hope. He might ruin what they have because of this damn witch, after all. He has to try to believe Shane when he says he won’t lose him because of it.

Oh my god, I didn't know there were any copies of this left on the internet. For those who don't know, this is like. This is a foundational text of hockey RPF. This is from before hockey RPF was really a thing even. It's from the mid-aughts and wasn't posted to a fanfiction website. Instead, OP dropped this insane RPF manifesto onto a normal ass hockey fan forum (which no longer exists) then deleted their account like two days later. Just handed this to a bunch of jocks and hockey bros and dipped. Legendary shit. Like, I don't think this kid even knew what fanfiction was, the fucking hand of god just compelled him to write about being an MLH player's sex slave and show it to the world. I pray every day that this insane child actually made it to the MLH and got to meet Scott Hunter.
So maybe Shane had a little crush on Scott Hunter in his younger years. So maybe he anonymously posted online about it once. So maybe it had become an internet legend and a running joke in the MLH.

Maybe you're wondering why Scott didn't have to leave to play hockey yet but it's because it's off season so it didn't start yet. But he told me when the season started he's going to bring me to the arena with him and I cna meet all the other hockey players and practice with them and everything.
"Are they going to like me?" I aksed.
"Of course they will because you're with me. nobody will mess with you while you're with me and everyoen is going to love you."
But Scott could tell I was still nervous so he told me all about the team and how the locker room looks and what I should talk about with with people so thye don't think I'm weird. He made me memorize all of the stats of the guys on the team but already knew a lot of them which mad e him very happy.
"In serious hockey guys just want to talk about hockey so if you know all their stats and you know how they play you won't have to talk about anything else" he said.
"But probably they dno't want me to tell them anything they're doing wrong, like we noticed McDuffy is going to wide on left wing but if I said that wouldn't he get mad?" I ask.
Scott shook his head. "No because theyre serious hockey players they wont' get mad, they'll be happy you told them so they can get better because everyone just wants to be better."
I'm feeling a little better but I can't help still feeling nervous when I think about the Admirals locker room. "If I say something wrong will you tell me?" I aks.
And then Scott hugged me and kissed me and said "of course I would. I have your back Sidney."
