“Are you alright?” Zayne asks.
You want to put your head on the wheel and cry. You feel pathetic.
“Did something happen?” You picture his frown. The way his eyes sharpen when he tries to pick apart a little mystery. You want him with you right now. “Please answer me.”
“I-I’m fine,” you answer quickly, a knee-jerk reaction to the question. You know you’re trying to convince yourself. You know he doesn’t believe it for a second. “Just… Just stay on the phone with me until I get back. Can you…? Am I bothering you?”
He hushes you softly through the phone. “You’re not bothering me, darling. I’ll stay with you.”

Mortality isn't measured between the hunted—and the hunter. But the first time you are seen, the next time you are loved.
Do commit to this early on: an apology is a sign post.
It doesn't run away but towards it. It doesn't whisper. Hear it shriek. It doesn't put away the fucking knife. One stab, repeatedly. It is the wherewithal to have a boundary—and forgetting it. Immediately. Then one more word. Two more words. Three more words. Out of luck. It has to douse itself in a fire. That's what separates it from a lie. It has to whittle itself to a nub. And be the universe, the unholy centre. It's only an apology when it’s writhing like a mass of worms in your mouth. The old switcheroo one-o-one. You can't even tell if the food is good. But you will nod along and say it is. You hope your next bite isn't worms. This is what happens when an apology shoves the main course to the floor.
So he doesn't.
He swipes a mouthful and tries the effort for what it is. Until you swallow he says nothing. Then you swallow it.
He looks up.
You meet him head-on. "It's delicious."
A part of him lives forever.
