She also had never expected him to cut his tour short and show up on her doorstep in the middle of the winter, insisting that she accompany him to Aubrey Hall at his mother's behest so that she and Eloise could repair their friendship before the new season began. She certainly had not expected an abundance of accidents and bad luck to leave them trapped alone at an inn for the foreseeable future.
But Penelope was resolute in her decision to break free of their so-called friendship. She could make due with her lingering anger at Colin's harsh words the season before and take solace in the fact that Colin, as a beta, wouldn't be ruled by his instincts at the prospect of being trapped with an omega like an alpha would.

It’s exactly the homecoming he’d wished for. His heart takes off in his chest. She smells like vanilla and lavender, and her whole body is warm and wrapped around him, and he wonders if maybe they could stay like this for the rest of their lives, because God, he’s missed her, too.
With his face buried in her neck, Colin murmurs, “Yeah, me, too.” Neither of them really let go, and he doesn’t want to read into it that much because—he doesn’t even know. Because he’s scared, maybe. Probably. Because he doesn't understand it and doesn’t want to. Because for all his exploration of caves and canyons, he isn’t sure he’s ready for whatever he’d find the second he reads the text of their friendship and discovers something hidden between the lines.
