587 days and Lucas had gotten no response from Max.
Eighteen months, and Lucas had stopped waiting for it.
Max’s hand twitches against Lucas, her heart rate accelerates.
He looks up at the ceiling when the lights in Max’s room begin to flicker. Lucas’ heart drops to his stomach. “Shit,” he whispers. He gets up from his chair, and rushes to the window, peeking out of the blinds.
Sure enough, he sees a Demo making its way into the hospital. “Shit. Shit, shit, shit,” he mutters, and rushes to Max. “We gotta get you out of here.”
OR max, lucas, and a demo attack bring them together again. loosely based off of the s5 clips from the trailers.

Lucas hasn’t cried since that night.
He’s not even sure if he cried that night. It’s just a terrified haze when he looks back on it now. All he remembers is the way the blood rolled down Max’s cheeks like tears. Sometimes it’s all he can see when he looks at her.
There’s no room for him to cry. Not with the weekly crawls. Not with the daily necessity to keep Dustin from getting himself killed. Not with Max lying lifeless in a hospital bed.

Sometimes you meet the girl you want to spend the rest of your life with at 13, sure- but sometimes you lose sight of her, try to win her back, then watch helpless while a monster worse than any hell you ever imagined crushes her body in front of you. You can't pick and choose which parts of the fairy tale you get; it doesn't work that way.
You want the girl? You take the pain, too.

She wouldn’t have seen any of that if it hadn’t been for Lucas. She would’ve been safe, undeniably, if he hadn’t told her.

“It ain’t your fault,” he said gruffly, tying off her bandage. He stayed squatted a moment more, searched her face. Cherubic, in a way. Glossy-soft, like paint. Cracked to a million fuckin’ pieces right in front of him.
Ellie shrugged, scoffed, rolled her eyes. Fourteen, he thought. Her tear ducts welled up, a couple of beads wobbling there. A twinkle in her eye, quivering stars. Too proud, in the midst of it all, to let them tip over. Not again.
A flash, then—her in the bar, scrubbing at her face. The squeeze in his chest. It wasn’t my first time.
The sun beams down on them now. Insects humming, running water somewhere close. Her silence, louder still. Her footsteps his only indication she is there at all.
There’s been an itch, something he’s longed to say, searching for the words. To another person, another child, another life—It’s not on you to save the world.
He aches, words limp in the cage around his heart, draped over ribs. Carcass-like, rotting. That tiny grave.
It’s kind of the whole fuckin’ point.

Her remorse lies thick and rank between them. Joel imagines he can see it rotting there, in between shafts of honeyed sunlight. Shame, he thinks, fits her so poorly. He’s reminded of Kansas City, of her sitting her with her back to the newspaper lined window, chin on her knees, a single tear on her cheek as she tells him:
It wasn’t my first time.
Little girls, he thinks, have no business carrying that sort of regret. He has no business reading into it this way - thinking about all the tender spots Ellie’s got lying in ruin inside of her, all of the ways this world has failed her. All of the ways he’s failed her, all of the ways he might still. She’s only a job, he tells himself sternly. She’s cargo.
