All his days are spent supposedly 'standing guard'—which isn't even true, because Grian is sitting half the time! So Grian considers the plots of land around him, his horrid diet of nothing but meat everyday, and does the only thing he can: he starts a garden.

And Scar, on his knees, smiling, says, Who cares what they have to say? It’s just us here now.
And Grian – a fool, always a fool – listens to him.

It growled. His hands balled into fists. Grian could barely breathe. He glared at the Watcher. Scar’s face— all signs of his trademark grin gone— glared back with hatred.
“How about this?” Grian stepped within arms reach. It looked him up and down, considering. “You leave my friend alone” — he gripped its shoulder, grinning at its discomfort — “and I won’t kill him.”
Scar’s crystals work, and Grian wants to know why.

Scar turns back to the road; clears his throat. “So, the princess has finally awoken from her beauty sleep, I see.”

The sun was rising over a dirt shack. Something clicked in his mind. The perfect target.
The ball and chain dragged him deeper into the ocean— into his own damnation.
He has a life or three to spare, he reasoned.
Grian is the Boogeyman, and Scar is on his list.
