It’s 2009 in rural North Georgia and Jayce Talis is running from something. He is running into the mountains, the prodigal son fleeing home in exile. There’s something screaming in the woods and something else whispering underneath his father’s house. He’s going home, God help him, he’s going home. And Viktor, his once best friend now a near stranger, works his grandmother’s farm and follows the old folk magic ways, and when he dreams of sinking into the black mud of his own grave, he sometimes wakes on misty mornings with his face pressed, cold and numb, into the tilled soil.
There’s something ancient and alive unearthed in the furrowed fields of Piltover County. There’s a circle drawn in horse’s blood. Foxes surround a lonely gravesite in the mountains. Gunshots echo from the farmhouse in the valley and poppets made from twigs and hair hang in the trees. Summary
The house is perfect.
Jayce loves it already, can see himself fixing up the place, putting a ramp in, and growing old with Viktor here. It’s a vision so palpable he can almost taste it, down to the star anise on Viktor’s breath and the pot of pozole on the stove.
He grins at the ivy crawling up the side of the house as he helps Viktor traverse the uneven steps. He can’t shake the thought that the steps look like teeth, and he has a terrifying mental image of Viktor being swallowed whole before it’s gone, as quickly as it came.
For Jayce and Viktor, their dream home turns out to be anything but.

Summary
Jayce's world shattered after the attack on the council room left his partner's body broken and mutilated. He did all he could think of in the moment to revive Viktor with their experimental anomaly, and failed. Viktor died and was buried with the anomaly attached and Jayce was put on house arrest for his attempt of necromancy while Piltover is thrust into lock-down until the attacker is caught.
Some time later Jayce has snuck into his old lab, left abandoned during the lock-down, to try once more to bring back his partner using an old, half remembered ritual of his youth.
