They pulled over for gas. This was a fight from the start: Scar announced halfway into their trip— that’s a figurative halfway, not a literal one, as traditional distances sort of break down when you’ve spent long enough in the void— that spaceships do need gas, and this one was in fact in dire need of more gas immediately.

The harbor won't open for another month or so— the ice has broken but it will be weeks before it thaws enough for safe passage both for coming ships and going ones, and another cold front could set them back even further. Then the first ships of the season will arrive, stocked with sugar and fruit, wine and coffee beans.
