His palm glides upward, unhurried, almost thoughtful. “It ain’t a crime to be selfish,” he says finally, voice rough with something that isn’t quite tenderness. “To indulge. That’s a fact of the matter.” He looks at Ray like he’s trying to drive the point straight through him. “Right here, right now—this is all we got left. Might as well.”
Ray needs Pete close all the time. It makes him a bit crazy.

But Art was talking about the hurricane they’d had twelve years ago, the one that had, six hours in, closed the Walk down for almost a week. The Squads had worked overtime to clear the roads again and there’d even been talk of shutting down the continental walk, standardizing the location. Garraty had sat through the footage of the protests in every history class since the second grade. THE LONG WALK IS FOR ALL AMERICANS. THIS LAND IS WALKER LAND.
“Those dumb bastards,” Abraham said. “You have to feel sorry for them, don’t you? Getting a week’s break only six hours in? I bet they hadn’t even handed out five tickets yet. Most of them probably weren’t even winded.”
(A tornado warning means Garraty and McVries get a moment to themselves, not that they really know what to do with it.)

“Okay. If you don't like your wish and you don't like mine, if you had a do-over, what would you ask for?” Ray asks, unimpressed, like this is a dare that he doesn't expect Pete to be able to complete.
Pete had spent a lot of time thinking about this after the Walk. It’s near impossible not to, really; you’re given the hardest choice you’ll ever make after the most horrific few days of your life, and you have forever to stew in the consequences of it. Pete has been stewing in it, indeed. “Do you really think you can wish for anything?” he asks. “It shouldn’t have been possible to get that kid an elephant so soon, but—”
“You want a magical wish, then? Like a fucking genie? It’s all hypothetical anyway. Go for it.”
Their feet move in tandem, like soldiers. The horrible ache in Pete’s stomach has gone away. This is the only time it ever goes away: here, in a dream, with Ray. “Well, I’d ask if I could just go on walking with you forever.”

“Wanna talk.” It’s not a question. At this, Pete sits up, cracking his neck to the side as he slowly wakes up more.
“The rain,” Pete whispers, and Ray understands why he doesn’t want to leave the room, not when they can hear the downpour tittering above them, bouncing off a metal roof with insistent percussive noise.
“Need to,” is Ray’s low answer. There’s an outhouse with a door that closes. They can be alone for a second and talk. That’s all that matters to him right now. They’ll be rain-drenched no matter what they do, but they could be somewhere without eyes on them. “Come on,” he urges.

this was inspired by a tweet i saw of someone complaining about the lack of freak nasty fics considering how the clip of pete smelling his hands after sticking them in ray's armpit did such numbers. this is barely proofread in any capacity so fair warning. have fun!!!

McVries would've been content with just saving Ray Garraty from a foolish decision. Somewhere in the process he accidentally forms a group of insurgents, discovers the meaning of brotherhood and maybe falls in love.
In terms of improvement, he really can't complain.

The memory was a drowsy flash: packed away in the night in the back of a station wagon under a wool blanket, Ray had still believed the rifle’s trajectory would somehow find him, the watching eyes would see and take aim. He’d flailed and thrashed to get back walking, until someone shot him with a sedative. He'd woken somewhere that smelled wet and thoroughly rural, feeling sick enough to be dead, but slowly and finally aware that he would live for the time being.
Thinking back on it again and again, he was sure there had been a hand grasping his arm in a panicked instinct, not one of the fighters but someone trying to keep him and Ray linked together in the confusion before they were quickly pulled apart.

“What food’ja pack?”
“What?” Pete knows what he meant, but wants to play.
Carefully and admonished, Ray asks again “What food did you pack?”
“Pocketed my morning can ration,” McVries answers. Knowing that this means even more canned ham and eggs, Ray wrinkles his nose.
“I brought half a cookie.” Ray’s proud of this fact.
Pete brings his shoulder in, bumping against Ray as Pete’s smile stays aimed low. “You spoil me.”
“Rotten, compadre,” Garraty finishes, borrowing one of Pete’s nicknames with a cheeky look. As Pete leads him down a path that’s still overgrown with lush greenery, barely tread, he tries not to burst.

Peter clutched Ray’s hand and planted it on his scarred chest, a little to the left, right on his heart. Ray could feel it, felt it dancing and kicking, like it wanted to get out, share blood with the arteries that perfused the hand on top of it. It was alive, McVries was alive.
