Annabeth reached out to grab Jason’s arm, her stomach curling with unease. “Wait—”
A dark chuckle erupted from the man. “I get mistaken for him a lot,” his voice rumbled. “Out of everyone, though, I thought you three would be able to tell the difference.”
The man twisted towards them—just enough to meet their eyes. All of the air in her lungs instantly evaporated, leaving her gasping. Simultaneously, a knife stabbed directly into her heart, ever-so-slowly being dragged to her stomach, leaving hellfire in its wake.
Red eyes. But—

alternatively: Chiron called Annabeth back to Camp Half-Blood three years after she walked away from it all, away from the painful memories that lingered, the ones that reminded her of what she lost, who she lost. Summary
Gone was the light of camp, the fearless leader. In its place was a broken hero, not knowing what to do next. It left a terrible sight that ruined their reputation as mighty gods. It left a nasty black mark on their record. Many of the gods feared another rebellion from the demigods was inevitable if they didn’t remove Percy from Camp Half-Blood. Percy was a legacy amongst demigods, and if he started to outright speak out against the gods, many feared that he could adopt a mass following, and march upon Olympus to raze it to the ground. Many feared that he could win. No, it was better for everyone if they forced him into the mortal world, away from anything godly for a while.
Restore the balance of peace, and then maybe he would be allowed back (doubtful).

“Thanks,” he praises, throwing a wink to an agape Arthur as he does. It’s wonderful.

The dreams begin five days after Merlin’s execution.
The dreams— colors and shapes made from the wreckages of Arthur’s memories, as meaningless as words like loyalty and friendship— begin with the gentle questioning of something uncertain of its own right to exist.
And Arthur answers the question the only way he can— with his mind turned away from the thoughts that filled him at night, facing the morning with nothing more than a frown and a promise not to think of his dream again.
There are more important things to face, anyway. Whatever his father has planned each day, it leaves no room for Arthur to think of petty things like a moment of a bad dream.

Or, at least, he would be-- if he hadn't shifted into Arthur's dreams instead. Not a ghost but still not quite there, Merlin fills the place in Arthur's head at night. At first, Arthur does all he can to ignore it. Eventually, though, he has no choice but to speak with the man who broke his trust.

Summary
What starts with a bit of over-protectiveness after nearly losing Merlin in the Valley of the Fallen Kings, ends with being hunted through the woods by a sorceress—because of course it does. While the witch claims to have no intention of hurting them, Arthur would like to disagree, seeing that he ends up spilling secrets that cause exactly as much damage as he expected.
At least that's what it looks like, right up until Merlin reveals secrets of his own. What follows is a struggle with both his own convictions and a traitor at court, and something that involves Greek heroes, winter nights, a dragon, and a better outcome than either of them would've dared to hope for.
