Shane is cut off by a hand on his mouth. He flushes.
“Too fast,” Ilya says. “My English… not good.”
“Sorry,” Shane mumbles into Ilya’s hand. Ilya grins and shakes his head, curls dancing, as he pulls his hand away.
“Is okay. Slow words. Okay?”
This year marks thirteen year Shane Hollander's third summer at Coach Marakov's elite hockey training camp. In attendance for the first time: Ilya Rozanov, visiting from Russia. Shane isn't the most sociable, and Ilya's English isn't the greatest, yet the unlikely duo soon become the best of friends.
It's just one summer, but it makes a world of difference.

With three children to raise, he got a steady job working in a warehouse. It was a job he enjoyed. He started out moving boxes around but when he was trained to drive the forklift, he got enough of a raise to move the family out of the East End and into a nicer neighborhood. The house was small, but it was theirs. It had a tree in the yard for the boys to climb and have friends over to play. He even started taking the boys out to play catch on Sundays before he left for work. The dining room had a spot for a little china cabinet, and Gemma was so proud to be able to fill it with her wedding china. He felt like he was being a good husband and father and provider, a real success in life.
Until the accident.

They’ve only been living together for two months, since Alex moved to the city for law school. Henry's Brooklyn apartment was a short commute to NYU, and the price was unbeatable, so he agreed to move in without even meeting the man in person. He was nervous, at first, to share close quarters with a stranger, but it’s worked out shockingly well; Henry is kind and considerate, and they mostly leave each other alone.
He’s also quite obviously gorgeous, and Alex doesn’t know why there isn’t a string of men coming and going from Henry’s room at all times, or perhaps one steady man. Inexplicably, Henry seems to have been single since Alex moved in in August.
