Clancy flinches back at the sudden movement. They’ve moved beyond the dead river by now, walking through deserted fields of tall grass. His legs ache, he wishes he could stop to take a breath.
The horse stumbles again and Clancy watches in surprise as Nico sends his right leg over the saddle and climbs down from the horse’s back. The horse stumbles again like his body had forgotten there was a person on his back and his balance is suddenly thrown off by the empty saddle straddling him.

There is a sea of trees behind Josh’s backyard, and there is nothing special about them. Sometimes, when Josh passes by a window, he would stop and stare at the trees with longing. Aching for simpler times. He rarely sees any kind of animals behind the leaves, Josh can count on one hand the amount of times he’s caught the tail of a deer, the fur of a wild cat. The birds sing sometimes, but usually, the woods stand silently, watching and engulfing the house like a silent guardian.
There is nothing strange about the woods. Josh has always repeated this exact sentence both to himself and to his brother. At night, lamptorch in their freezing hands and coats zipped up to their chins, Josh whispered like a mantra; “There is nothing strange about the woods.”

Now that his brain was forced to focus on his legs to keep him standing, Jayce could register more of his surroundings, namely, the incessant screaming coming from his right. “Where are all their belongings?” Caitlyn asks then, her voice cold and professional, detached from the ache in her chest.
Mel drags a finger across the dust on the desk. “Jayce's mother has come to collect his belongings, I doubt it will be a problem for you to ask to see them.” Mel's voice is equally as professional, the curves of her accent twisting around her words like the roots of a plant in fresh soil.
Caitlyn hums. “And his partner?” She knew his name, knew who he was but the wound was still too fresh. The wound that she and the nation carried, barely healed, sometimes still bleeding. It felt wrong to utter his name, similar to a curse.
“We threw it away.” Mel replies, unbothered by the weight of her words. It disturbs Caitlyn how calm the Counselor is, how nonchalant she is to the whole ordeal.
