Wow. Okay. Wow. Yeah. This was really good. I knew exactly what I was getting into, and yet that didn’t make it any easier… This was AMAZING though! I love how well the characters are written. Scar feels genuinely obsessive and twisted, and Grian’s character arc throughout the whole thing is SO perfect. It wraps up in a way that feels complete and gives you closure, and it’s fitting for the story that that closure isn’t a perfectly happy ending. I love how all the characters interact, it feels like everyone’s just fighting to stay afloat. Plus the memory reveals throughout the whole thing are so cool! Genuinely just a really good, well-written fic. The descriptions of the bodies can be pretty hard to read, especially as a squeamish person myself, but if you don’t mind that and are looking for a fic with a good ol’ bittersweet ending, I would highly recommend this!

    Summary

The insurmountable sound of the roof caving in, the support beams failing, and the marble decorations shattering around him seemed to stop all at once. There was nothing but silence. Cold, abrupt, threatening silence.

As quickly as it had begun, the disaster simply ceased.

“Woah,” an unknown voice chimed, echoing through the rubble. A man smiled down at him, his expression bordering somewhere between surprised and amused. “You’ve caused quite a bit of chaos here, haven’t you?”

After accidentally wreaking havoc inside a temple in the woods, Grian finds himself indebted to a god he doesn't know, as well as a strange man who calls himself the temple's priest.

    Bookmarker's Notes

Grian (currently a criminal) becomes indebted to a god but doesn’t know that the priest he’s falling in love with, Scar, IS the god, which creates some problems when he gets wrapped up in god politics.

This fic made me so happy inside! It’s wonderfully written and I especially enjoyed the subtle hints at 3rd Life things (Grian being indebted to Scar, Martyn and Grian’s parallels, Martyn wanting him to join them, etc). I’ve already read some of Cal’s other works, so I knew exactly what I was getting into, and she did not disappoint. As engaging and heartstring-tugging as always!

    Summary

Grian presumed his soul was actively leaving his body – providing him with just another last minute delusion to take him into the next life - until he heard music.

His tired delusions were a lot of things, but they were never music.

Grian blinked, once, twice, then a third time. Still, the shape on the horizon didn’t fade. The light didn’t fade. The music didn’t fade. This wasn’t the blurry shadow of what may or may not be a rock, or the light of the moon against a wave imitating a town. This was a genuine miracle. This was his relief.

    It was a ship!

After being cursed by a witch, Grian finds himself stuck in the form of a parrot with no way to change back, and only a conveniently handsome pirate captain to rely on until he reaches land.

Brief summary for myself: Grian is cursed to be a parrot until he reaches land and hitches a ride on a pirate ship. He visits the captain in his dreams and ends up falling in love.

    Summary

Grian knew a lot of things.

He knew how to cook for a crew of 60 people. He knew how to clean and scrub the deck until his arms went numb. He knew how to avoid being the crew's punching bag for the night. He knew when to shut up and do what he was told.

But most importantly — he knew not to hope.

    Because hoping hurts.

So when a battle ends and an unfamiliar man steps into the kitchen, grinning at him like he’s not just another piece of plunder, Grian doesn’t know how to react. And when he’s led onto the deck to meet the pirate captain — the man who now holds his fate in his hands — he braces himself for another cage.

Instead, he’s met with curiosity. Freedom. A handshake, instead of shackles.

And, for the first time in years, a dangerous flicker of something he told himself he’d never feel again.

    Hope.

Ohhhh I loved this fic so much! it was so fun and endearing and sweet
Basically Grian’s an enslaved avian who gets rescued by pirate Scar and the fic follows his journey learning to trust people again, with a healthy dose of plot
Kind of has a mix of fluff and angst, but not too angsty, just well balanced. I love the world building and Grian’s growth as a character
