Summary
“You’re such an asshole, Ilyusha.” Svetlana was shaking her head, “Go, find your husband. Stop being rude.”
The man in question put a hand to his heart, in a surprising show of drama, and threw his eyes to the sky, “So mean to me. On my wedding day too.”
Svetlana snorted, “I am sure you will survive. Go.”
“Okay, okay. I will leave you to Rose Landry.” Ilya put his hands up, backing away fast as if Svetlana might change her mind, and happened to back directly into Shane. The two went down in a tangle of limbs.
Or: Rose attends the wedding of the year. She really doesn't expect to find love.

Summary
“Well, you missed the party. I have to take pity on my rookie, show him a good time.” Birdie smirked, “What, was it terrible?”
Yes, it was all horrible. Shane wanted to say that. He couldn't make himself do it. The casual possessive, the warmth in his gaze felt paralyzing.
Still, “You shouldn't have-”
“C'mon, Holly. We're beyond shoulds, you and I. You can't follow me around like such a good dog and not expect me to keep pushing you. Seeing how far that obedience stretches.” Birdie leaned forward, a certain look to his eyes, like the one he got every time he has some new vision for the future. For all his eyes flicked quickly between Shane's expression and body, something nervous even as he licked his lips and continued, boldly, “Tell me you're not hard and I'll drop it.”

Summary
"Your mom and dad do love each other." This, Shane was sure of. Hayden and Jackie were two parts of the same whole, since the moment they met. He would know, he was there. But to explain it to two very distraught little girls was a more complicated thing, "It's just hard for your mom, with your dad away for hockey so often. They also get upset after a long day, okay? I'm sure they don't mean it either."
"I don't want Dad to play hockey anymore. He can play with us, at home." Jade sniffled.
Ruby just nodded again.
He set them both back down and kneeled down to their level. "I promise, he wants to be home with you guys everyday. Hockey is your dad's dream, though, and it won't be forever. He's doing all this so that one day, he can spend everyday with you guys."

With the help of the Pike family, Shane comes to some realizations. So do the Pikes.

Summary
"Yeah, I don't want to push, but you're usually with your Boston girl - Lily?"
Shane sighed. Exactly the topic he wanted to avoid. "It's complicated."
Hayden snorted, but he still looked sympathetic, "Yeah, man, I figured. You don't talk about her."
Without thinking, he flinched. It just was such a gut punch. He wanted to talk to someone about Ilya. It was surprising in how much he wanted to talk to someone about this. This whole fucking mess. Here he was talking to Hayden about his personal life, his family, and Hayden didn't know anything about that side of his life. Nobody knew.

Eva Stratt liked outliers. She always had.
So it was a bit of a disappointment to find that face to face Dr Ryland Grace was actually very milquetoast.

Summary
“Proof of concept,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. “We’ve tested it thoroughly to ensure it fits the specified nutritional profile, and several members of our team have ingested small amounts of it to ensure there were no adverse effects.”
“You ate some of it?” I ask, rudely. I’m too irate to mind my language. Who do they think they are? That meat is for Grace. In a way, that meat is Grace.
“Yes,” ♫♬♯♩♩♫ says. They and the rest of the human life support thrum know better than to be offended by my occasionally strange behaviour. “Obviously we weren’t going to risk the life of Honoured Grace on a completely untested technology.”
That doesn’t mean much. There’s a lot of things that are safe for ingestion by Eridians that would outright kill a human.
Trust Grace, I remind myself. He’ll have thought of all this.
(OR: Grace's meburgers from the book epilogue. Let's talk about those!)

Summary
The elevator's receiver array picks up a garbage signal beamed in from deep space. No matter their attempts, Eridian scientists cannot make top or bottom of it. A misfire, or an echo of that long lost crew's final transmission, most likely. It is recorded, but never publicized.
And then it happens again.
