Time fractures and Caitlyn with it. She feels like she’s tumbling through rushing water, surfacing just as her vision warps and her lungs burn for a taste of sweet, clean air before she is pulled under again, helpless beneath the weight of her own body. She snatches at clarity in fragments. Vi’s blunt fingernails biting into her wrist, her grip slackening. The sour smell of sweat and sick and dirt as Jayce brushes past her shoulder, his hammer thumping in tandem with his heavy steps. Jinx’s slight figure at the mouth of an alley, outlined in sickly neon light, ushering them onwards. Broken bottles at their feet, crunching beneath Caitlyn’s boots. The wild whites of Vi’s eyes rolling back in her head as Jinx slaps at her cheeks. The slick feel of Caitlyn’s jacket where it is pressed into Vi’s side, fusing to her skin. Vi’s head lolling onto her shoulder, weak gasps fading and fading and fading.

Vi squeezes her wrists lightly and relaxes her grip. Tears snake down her face, charting across her cheeks and sliding wetly down Caitlyn’s palms. Warmth still lives inside of her, thrums in her, Vi’s body like a seething star in the night. Beautiful to the point of destruction. Caitlyn presses cool fingers to her face to keep her from immolation.
