Geno rides in the cramped back seat with his bag beside him and his knees pressed tight against the seatback in front of him. It’s like being on the plane all over again.
His mother is twisted around in her seat to look back at him, eyes still a little red from her tears but her face absolutely lit up as she talks about their plans for the week, all the things they’ll do and the food they’ll make. Geno’s father occasionally will chime in, but it’s mostly Natalia who is running the show and Geno’s head is spinning. Their weekly chats are never this intense and this is the most Russian he’s heard in ages. -

Mr. Eastin, who lives beneath the docks, just celebrated his 126th birthday and Ms. Saccone, who tends to the pumpkin patch, is just behind him at 115.
This isn’t the kind of town people move away from. They settle and put down roots, metaphorically and, occasionally, literally.
It’s only been three or four years since Sid arrived.
(Three years, eleven months, two weeks, four days and a handful of hours, to be exact. But Geno doesn’t like to admit that he can still narrow it down so precisely.)

He knows of Andromache Restoration—knows the artists there from the work they’ve done across London, the paintings cleaned and repaired, the ceramics restored from broken pieces, the metalwork reforged.

Come down slowly, Joe thinks hysterically as he descends the ladder right into the arms of this man who, very unfortunately, smells incredibly good, just a hint of sandalwood on his skin, and feels incredibly firm and comforting against Joe as he makes sure the ladder doesn’t break while Joe’s still on it. Come down slowly, he thinks, and imagines, against his better judgment, coming down slowly next to this man in bed.
If only his opinions on literature weren’t so wrong.
