"Rabastan knew what it was like to live in someone’s shadow. He had been there his whole life, gladly so for most of it if he was being honest. Always a step behind his brother, always watching his back, always looking up to him."

Summary
It’s like it takes effort, for Alphard to be the laughing, jovial man he’s been at Christmases and birthdays back at the house. Like he saves up his energy all year for that. At first, Sirius thinks he’s ill, or that something’s gone wrong. “You’re sure you’re all right with me being here?” he’d asked, when Alphard hadn’t stirred for the better part of a day. “You’re sure I’m not putting you out?”
Sirius had never really noticed how much his uncle drank at parties. Then again, you expected it of adults at parties. You don’t expect them to drink the same way on any Tuesday. Or Friday. Or any of the days in between. “You’re family,” he’d said, in a way that seems to mean something very different to him than it does to his sister, Sirius’s mum. At least it doesn’t sound like a curse.
What if Sirius went to his uncle's flat before he moved in with the Potters? What if he learned he wasn't quite so alone as he'd thought?
Canon compliant, mostly a character study of Alphard through Sirius's eyes.

“It’s Kendall.” She looked up at her brothers. “Which means one of you told him.”
Roman raised his eyebrows, muttered, “Wasn’t fuckin’ me.”
“It was me,” Connor admitted, placing the baby back in her cot. “It’s not like he wasn’t going to find out. What good does it do anyone for him to hear about it from someone who isn’t a member of the family?”
“It probably would’ve hurt his feelings,” Shiv offered.
Roman clicked his fingers. “That would’ve been cool. I would have loved that."

Bookmarker's Notes
No one ever could have incarnated Logan after his death, because Logan was a force of nature whose presence could fill the largest room, and anyone who would let themselves be reduced to a mere vessel could never embody a great man. Kendall was realizing this slowly: he never could have won. There was nothing he could have done. To accept erasure was to be weaker than Logan could stand. To resist it was to declare war. He had tried both, to no avail.
Now, having spent his life making room inside himself for Logan only to watch his father float away and leave him behind with whatever was left, Kendall felt like a vacant apartment someone had moved out of in a hurry. There was no furniture. There were thumbtacks and nails on the floor.

"He disappeared after leaving the school... traveled far and wide... sank so deeply into the Dark Arts, consorted with the very worst of our kind, underwent so many dangerous magical transformations, that when he resurfaced as Lord Voldemort, he was barely recognizable." — Albus Dumbledore
Tom Riddle's four most pivotal encounters in the years between his departure from England and his return a decade later as Lord Voldemort: a vampire hunter in Albania, a voodoo queen in New Orleans, a snake charmer in India, a Seer in Greece—and somewhere on the way, a transformation.

Bookmarker's Notes
She had walked the boy to this garden to show him her roses; when he pulled them both behind a hedge and wagged his tongue inside her mouth, she’d slapped him once with a force that had shocked him, and laughed.
It had bought something like freedom, but only for a time. The Yaxley boy would take the second if he couldn’t have the first, and Rodolphus Lestrange would hit her back, and would hit harder. They’d all need to leave their home, their easy nursery; a girl’s days had an end to them and the sand was slipping down. Lucius Malfoy was worthless, but even Cissy seemed to realize that she could likely do no better. When she went back into the house, he might be seated, too.
Women, Belltrix knew, were meant to be taken. To be claimed. To belong to a thing more powerful than they were. She considered all her options with the grass cold under her stockings, destroying three roses, one at a time.&
“What will you do with my friendship, My Lord?”
His tone was almost lazy. “Anything I want.” It had always been that way for her, how fear bubbled up inside her as a sort of wild thrill.
An in-character, perfect representation of a talk between a young Bellatrix Black—soon to be Lestrange—and her Master. Do yourselves a favour and read it. Every word is a masterpiece. -

A reflection on Bella and Andromeda, brilliantly written, containing some of the best descriptors of Bella I have ever read.
She had always burned with emotions and took delight in the sensual. & There are two occasions where Bellatrix feels the most alive: at the point before climax and during the heat of battle. -

Bookmarker's Notes
So. It doesn't even matter to me anymore if we don't get The Winds of Winter and A Dream of Spring. I've read this, and that's enough.
This takes the best theories on the Long Night and the Night's King and the Children of the Forest and develops them in the best possible way. It's perfect.Jaime drew a breath slowly and stepped back from the edge. He turned around, and then he halted, his whole body stilling. He was standing on top of the Wall looking south, and far in the distance, at the very farthest edge of the world in his view, the eastern sky had faded to a paler blue, and there was a thin pink-orange line of color just barely limning the curve of the horizon.

Jaime didn’t like the Starks at all. He didn’t like their earnestness and honesty and prudishness, he didn’t like their cold heavy-walled castle, he didn’t like their frozen block of a realm, and he especially didn’t like Robb Stark, who had saved his son’s life and been kind to him and got him to sleep, and what business of his was it to have done any of those things?

Bookmarker's Notes
This is nothing short of majestic. Watch Jaime get back his honour, one small deed at a time, all the while coming into contact with gods as ancient as the world and the bargains they strike. Read him going from a non-believer to the best man he could possibly be.
All of the other characters are painfully IC, the story is sexy and witty and the writing is striking - as astolat's fiction always is. And as always the plot is immaculate, all of the character's choices are smart and make absolute sense - I loved Jon in this. And the part about the old gods had me perched on the edge of my seat.
More than one of these passages will thrill you to your bones - in the best way possible - and I just wish that we got a part two with Ned and Cersei in King's Landing, and Tommen turning out to be the king the realm deserves after all.But it wasn’t. It was the cold hard sensible price the Starks grimly paid for the help they needed to survive in the North, a vast tangled network of secret roots growing beneath their lives, completely invisible from the surface but deeper than the mines of Casterly Rock. The Starks had gods on their side. And his father was about to pick a fight with them.

Bookmarker's Notes
This brilliant author's magnum opus. The plot is brilliant, the characterizations are spectacular, all of the players are smart and the way they play the game of thrones will leave you breathless. Funny, smart, extremely well-written. Every character has their own distinct voice. Almost 90K words and I read them in one sitting. Book-level. I wish I could wipe my memory and re-read it all for the very first time.

Summary
Jaime didn’t understand why Cersei suddenly insisted on trimming his hair and shaving his beard, but he also didn’t care to fight her on it, even though he’d just as soon have kept the beard: it was bitterly cold in the small tower room with its arrow-slits. At night, even curled together under the two blankets they’d been allotted, it took the better part of an hour before their bodies could warm the bed enough to sleep.

Bookmarker's Notes
I can't believe this series ended with such a perfect finale. Which, ironically, is what should have happened in Succession 1x01, if we lived in a better world.
Some highlights of this chapter:
This killer line: The earth spun wildly on the axis of their eye contact.
And this: “But your dad didn’t understand me,” Stewy said. “He never did. He didn’t think I could love you if I couldn’t rely on you. I saw what he did to you guys, he made you fight for scraps. He saw I didn’t have to live on scraps, and he thought if I only got scraps from you, I’d walk away. But he had it backwards. I could wait.”
Nothing will ever be the same after this. Literally the Succession fic of all time. -
