He’s not sure what’s happened since—oh… they had taken him into surgery. He hadn’t read the consent forms. He couldn’t read the forms, but—his father had been beside him. His father had held his hand, smiled like cracking ice in springtime, and assured him in a low voice, “It’s going to be alright. Trust me, Wylan. This is going to fix everything. You’re going to be better. You do want that, don’t you?” (Wylan had nodded, because he knew that he should, and—and because he was so dazed by it. Unsure if he was dreaming. For his father to be kind, for his father to speak like… when he was just a child, and his disease had not presented, and the future was bright.)
Or: A presumed standard hospitalization leaves Wylan at the mercy of Wright Reform Universal, a factory operation through which society's "undesirables" have their identities stripped and their minds systematically reprogrammed, giving them new purpose in line with their manufactured new identities—each with an upper class price tag for a wealthy pool of buyers.

Jesper must have fallen asleep, because the next thing he knew, he was stirring awake to the sound of soft, but insistent scratching. Bleary eyed, he pushed himself up on his elbows, looking around for the source until his gaze fell on the window. He stared for a moment, uncomprehending of the small face of a fox staring right back at him, red fur aglow from the light cast by his nearby floor lamp.
Or: Several hours after a reconnaissance mission turned vicious battle and narrow escape from the Yeerks, Wylan turns up with some difficult news for Jesper.

Summary
Wylan Van Eck is a rising star. Jesper Fahey is hoping to make ends meet each month with poorly paid gigs. Five years ago they met in a band called "The Crows" and for two years, their dreams were becoming a reality. That was until an offer to get signed fell only on Wylan, resulting in a bad breakup of both the band and Jesper.
For the next five years, Wylan grew in popularity as The Crows faded from memory. Though, not everything about celebrity life is as glamorous as Wylan makes it out to be. Something darker is at play.
With a past intertwined together, what will happen when fate inevitably draws them back together again? How much of a difference can five years really make?
