Despite his palpable affections for the omatikayan, Aonung never dared to say anything about it. Unlike Tsireya and Loak, who pretty much were already seen as a pair by the entire village.
Aonung didn't want to get too attached. Just in case the Sullys suddenly decided it was time for them to return to the forest.
So, quite idiotically, the metkayina settled on being a friend Neteyam could lean on.
He thought it was enough - until he realised it wasn't.
It took Neteyam surviving a gunshot and miraculously surviving death itself for him to realise that it wasn't enough.
Aonung could've lost him, and the thought was convincing enough for him to get a grip.
Get a grip, and maybe, possibly, say something about the affection he felt for the other the entire time, and how he had been disguising it as being 'a good friend'.
Except he had no clue on how to go about it.
or Aonung is bad at expressing himself with words - and even worse with poems. Neteyam is (endearingly) confused.
alternatively: Aonung is pathetically down bad, and everyone except Neteyam can see it.

His sword lowered first, then his knee eased off Wemmbu’s chest, though he didn’t fully let him go. The space between them was still too close, breaths mingling in the cold air.
“Look at me,” Flame said quietly.
Wemmbu hesitated.
Slowly, Flame reached up—not with the roughness of anger, but with something careful, almost reverent. Two fingers caught the edge of the lavender veil.
Wemmbu’s breath hitched. “Flame—”
“Don’t.” His voice softened. “Let me see you.”
Flame lifted the veil the way a groom would lift a bride’s—gentle, deliberate, intimate. The fabric slipped upward, revealing familiar features beneath.
Time seemed to stop.
Flame’s eyes widened, his hand freezing mid-air as recognition crashed over him. His breath stuttered.
“…You.”
Wemmbu swallowed. “Hi.”

After falling into Boosfer's void trap, Wemmbu finds himself trapped under the Nether with Flame.

It’s like your words flip a switch inside of him, relief flooding his body in a surge, and any stress in his shoulders simply melting away. You think, for just a moment, that his eyes might be sparkling with the beginning of tears, but he blinks, and the thought is gone.
“Do you want that, Eddie?” Volt whispers, the bolts of his hair sparking over Eddie’s face, his hand slowly encircling his neck. “Do you need it?”

Neither of you speak immediately. You can't even bring yourself to meet Volt’s eyes; you’re focused solely on Eddie, and how still, how charged he is.
“Are either of you going to fucking say anything?” His grip tightens on Volt’s hair, and Volt nearly stumbles back.
