Even if that means diving into a lingering fragment of the Metaverse where Akechi is trapped in a hell of his own making. They say “abandon all hope”, don’t they? Akira has a lot of hope to go around, and he’s never known when to quit.

There’s a long pause as Ryuji takes that in.
"Is that a coworker of yours?"
Akira looks up. Ryuji looks confused.
"Akechi Goro, Ryuji," Akira's mouth says for him because his mind is already trying to escape the lunacy of this interaction.
Ryuji scratches the back of his neck. "Sorry, man. Y’know how I am with names. Tell me about him, maybe I'll remember."*****
The world wants to erase Akechi Goro from history. Akira is not about to let that happen.

Summary
Goro stands there, politely looking away as Akira coughs and heaves into the toilet. Despite the circumstances, Goro doesn’t find himself disgusted by the sight in front of him, and instead he’s hit with a wave of restless energy. Consumed by the need to do something and yet infuriatingly unable to do anything. His hands clench into fists so tight he can feel the imprint of his nails in the flesh of his palm.
It’s only when it finally seems as if Akira’s finished for the moment, clutching at the rim and trying to catch his breath, that Goro finally speaks.
“Why do you insist on acting like everything is fine when you’re clearly not feeling well?”

“Lotus. That’s what your name means, right?”
It’s a Tuesday in November. Akechi is going to kill him in two weeks. He smiles plastic like nothing has changed and Ren wants to scream.
“Yeah,” Ren replies, looking down at the board between them. He lifts one of his remaining pawns and moves to capture one of the traitor’s, adding it to the pile of white pieces at his side. “Why do you ask?”
Two years later, Kurusu Akira finds himself with a random roommate at a college that wouldn't accept him. He's not the only one with a new lease on life.

Summary
After a few more seconds, Akira peeks up at Goro. He’s in the midst of turning his head, as though he had just been looking at Akira, as though he didn’t want to be caught doing so. Akira tempts that fate. He stares at Goro, at the way the sunlight burnishes his hair, at how his throat moves as he swallows. Goro lifts a hand and rubs it across his face and then, abruptly, he sits.
“Fine,” he says. “Let’s start the shitty day.”
The comment, grousing and grudging as it is, makes Akira smile. “That’s the spirit.”
“If you wanted spirit, you should have moved in with Yoshizawa.”
The past year hasn’t just dulled Akira’s ability to mask how he feels behind an impassive wall. He can see Goro’s comment for the slight that it is, not against Sumire, but against Goro himself.
“And yet here I am.” He reaches out then, slowly, so Goro can move away if he doesn’t want to be touched. Yet Goro doesn’t. He remains still, watching as Akira pokes him once, gently, on the forehead. “What does that tell that big brain of yours?”

When I received the call, the warden seemed bewildered that you were even here at all.” It was a phone call that Naoto would not soon forget—the chilling way that the warden seemed to continually forget what he was asking mid-sentence, unable to latch onto Akechi’s name as if his existence was something contingent on his direct and immediate presence.
Akechi bared his teeth, eyes in shadow. “Nobody has ever known what to do with me,” he said, voice dripping acid.
“Then, this should be refreshing for you,” he said, delighting in the way that Akechi’s gaze sharpened as Naoto plucked a nonexistent piece of lint from his coat. “You’re coming with me. To Inaba.”
At the end of P5R, the world forgets Akechi.

Summary
The first ray of sunlight emerges over the curve of the earth's horizon. In the pure, golden light, Ren sheds his sheen of otherworldliness, reduced from a dream to the boy that Goro had left behind that night a year ago, small and tired but so much more real. It strikes something deep and yearning in Goro's heart, and he feels himself melt in the warmth of the morning spilling towards them.
Wherever the light touches Ren, it turns the strands of his dark hair the color of rich caramel, his eyelashes into finely spun gold framing his gray eyes. He looks down at their joined hands- their own gravity, the threads of fate holding their stardust together. "You know, I've thought about this a lot. Maybe too much. The next time around, after however many lifetimes... who'll we be? What could I become?" Ren pauses just a little too long, blinks quickly a couple of times and glances up. "Tell me- will we ever meet again?"

A grin blooms on Ren's face, a watery winter sunbeam breaking through the clouds. Goro swallows down the lump in his throat until it becomes a fluttering in his stomach, and suddenly finds it really hard to believe that that smile couldn't ever convince him to stay.
He pulls off his glove to touch Ren's hand. Their fingers entwine and their palms fit together like they've done this a thousand times, as if they might still do it a thousand more.
