Their faces were not the same, but close enough. The pair of golds, the fake and the real, meet face to face and Xie Lian does not glimpse the moment when his face— her face contorts from sheer emotion.

Our tale begins with Xie Lian hiring an escort to help him deal with an “unspeakable affliction” after a disastrous breakup forced him to leave college and return to his hometown.
Hua Cheng (or Wuming, as he is called when we first meet him) isn’t really interested in helping people—he just wants to get paid. If the situation with a client seems too complicated to deal with, he has no problem walking away. But for some reason he can’t explain, he feels compelled to help Xie Lian.

Xie Lian did not fear much.
He did not fear the ghost in front of him, as it pondered its collection of carving knives, looking for the best one to carve Xie Lian up with.
He was chained to the wall, his hands above his head, thick manacles around his wrists - but really, it was only because he was playing along! Xie Lian had only wanted to solve this as quickly as possible in the hopes of finding some of the ghost’s victims alive, and he’d been curious about its motives - which, he thought as the ghost picked up one of the carving knives to inspect it, seemed pretty straightforward. Sadly, there were no surviving mortals in sight, and the cave he was in smelled of death and decay.
