Katara eyes him like he’s an animal, a wild thing she’s trying to ease into domestication. ‘The opposite, actually.’ She uncrosses her legs, leans forward in her chair and those tight blue eyes— full and ambivalent and certain all at once— get his full attention. ‘What if I did it? What if we did?’
‘What if we did what?’
Her cheeks are ruddy, her braid messy as though she’s spent too long anxiously fiddling with it. ‘Date. Court. Whatever you call it.’
Zuko blinks, repeats her words back to himself once twice, trying to make sense of them. No good; his brain is scrambled. ‘What…? What are you talking about?’
‘Sokka’s plan,’ she says slowly, frowning at him. ‘I’ve been thinking about it. It’s sound in theory, he just had the wrong girl in mind.’
‘Sokka’s…’ Zuko wet his lips. ‘You think we should play out Sokka’s plan?’
‘Yes.’

Summary
They all look a bit weary, a bit rough around the edges, a bit scared. But every single one of them has a look of determination on their faces, of the grim resolve that they will see this through to the end, no matter the cost. They will either emerge victorious or die fighting.
Anything less would not be fair to the world.
(Then again, why is it on them to save the world from tyranny? On a group of teenagers and barely adults? That isn't fair.
But the world has never cared about fairness. At least not in the last century, and fuck it, someone needed to make a stand rather sooner than later.)

Another smile. Another kiss. And as she lays there, wrapped up in Zuko's warmth, Katara remembers a saying: love is brightest in the dark. And here is the thing - times are dark; they are living through darkness. But she has found her light, and she will not let it go if it's the last thing she does.

But, he doesn't seem to notice as he blinks at her too.
So, she takes the initiative to offer her hand towards him, letting a smile grace her face. "Nice to meet you."

Aang was the real winner. The hero. He'd ended the war. Not alone but he was the Avatar. The bringer of peace. If anyone deserved spoils, it was the charismatic monk.
Not Zuko. No. Never the son of a monster, a boy with a questionable past, the scarred prince. Fire Lord, he reminded himself. The title hardly felt like a victory. It felt like pressure and expectations and stress. Work. Duty. Sacrifice.

Summary
They had no idea when things started changing between them. Maybe it was instantaneous- like lava meeting water, hardening in an instant with a furious hiss of ember and steam.
Or perhaps it was the little things - reading Fire Nation plays by the turtleduck pond as the setting sun painted the water gold, stories and legends traded like treasures beside a crackling fire in the unending night of the South Pole.
Or it was in the whispered tales of mothers and siblings and uncles and gran grans - each shared word a delicate thread pulling them closer and closer.
No matter how one thing was sure- they were no longer strangers, a thorn in each other's paths. Neither friends nor foes, neither warm nor cold but something in between. Somehow, somewhere along the way, in their dreams and only in their dreams, Katara and Zuko found each other.
In other words - Katara and Zuko start meeting each other in their dreams and shenanigans ensue.
