Summary
Nancy wore shorts sometimes, in the summer. Short little shorts that presented their own challenges to Robin's fragile psyche. And to bed, too, when they'd slept over each others' houses and dorms and now apartments. Shorts or pajama pants. Sometimes not even that. Not that Robin noticed. Not that it mattered. Not that it was any of her business what kind of clothes Nancy liked to sleep in, even if they were sleeping in the same bed.
But in the daytime, Nancy wore skirts. And at night, if she had time to change after work before they went out, sometimes she wore dresses.
And Robin was the worst person in the world.

And second of all-" She held out another bikini on a hanger and raised an eyebrow. Robin just shrugged helplessly. Nancy rolled her eyes. "Second of all, I need a new bathing suit. Come on."

Robin walked up the quiet little street on the other side of the lot, and sure enough the house was right where it was supposed to be, and there were a lot of seashells on the porch but she picked up the only one that looked like it might be able to hold a key, a big spiral-y snaily kind of shell, and she heard the telltale rattle of something in there, and when she dumped the single brass key out into her hand it was warm.
From the porch here she could see the ocean just over a little concrete wall where the street ended, not more than a few houses away. Prime real estate, she guessed.

Tommy Hagan was making out with Carol Perkins up against the outside wall of the school. In full view of everybody eating lunch at the picnic tables, which was what Nancy was trying to do, but the current view wasn’t doing much for her appetite.
“Jeez. Get a room.”
Robin’s voice and the sound of a lunch tray slapping down on the table next to her startled Nancy out of whatever trauma-induced fugue state Tommy and Carol’s exhibitionism had locked her into. She felt herself blushing. She turned her attention to her own tuna sandwich and carrot sticks.

“Lonnie wants a boy,” Joyce says.
“Your husband?”
Joyce snorts. “If you can call him that.”
There’s something nice about how that sounds, like the idea that just because you said your vows in front of God and your whole family doesn’t mean you have to call the man your husband. Karen smiles.
“You know what?” she says. “Give me a cigarette after all.”
The smile Joyce gives her back is like a secret between friends. “My kind of girl,” she says, fishing into her purse, and when Karen takes the cigarette between her lips, Joyce lights it for her.
