With their father out of the picture, the hospital immediately put them up for adoption. Quickly the paler boy, now named Nai so lovingly by his new parents, was adopted by a rich family. However, the other, called Vash by those who fostered him through the years, didn't have it so easy.

Rem sends Nai and Vash to summer camp to make friends. Vash flourishes, befriending everyone he meets. Nai isn't happy about it and does whatever is necessary to stay #1 in Vash's life.

In a shocking turn of events, Rufus beats Cloud up on the roof top when they fight. Instead of killing him, he takes him captive, torturing him in more ways than Cloud can handle, breaking him, and building him back up into the mold of exactly what he wanted. Six months later, he's rescued, and no one could have expected the outcome of the abuse he had endured.
Zack also lives, and isn't too happy when he finds out that Cloud has fallen back into ShinRa's hands.
(This story is very dark, please heed the warnings, as there are a lot of sensitive topics. Clack will be endgame, and the ending will be 'happy')

“You’re a SOLDIER, aren’t you?” Rufus made the question seem more like a statement, like he did not need confirmation from someone he considered lesser. Given the attitude of his father, before his untimely skewering, the condescension wasn’t too much of a surprise and Cloud wondered if Rufus would care for the passing of his only remaining relative. Doubtful, given the rumours that circulated about the intense dislike between the now-dead President and his Heir Apparent. There was no love lost there.
“Which, of course,” Those cold blue eyes narrowed as Rufus continued, the corner of his lips curling up in something that could have been a smile in any other circumstance, but was more a clever concealment of sharp teeth ready to bite, “Would mean that I own you.”
Cloud scoffed loudly to hide how much he wanted to bristle in disgust, the sudden repulsion as he tossed his head enough to throw blonde hair across his face, but by the way Rufus’ smile blossomed into something truly carnivorous, it seemed he wasn’t chagrined in the least at the disrespectful response. That was Shinra’s way. It was all about ownership. All about staking a claim.
“Ex-SOLDIER.” Cloud bit out, shortly, “I quit.”

Although SOLDIERS are widely regarded and looked up to. Everyone within Shinra know - at least through the grapevine - that the men juiced up on make are not always right in the head. Hence, they can get away with only a curt e-mailed reprimand when damaging property or personnel.
One of the nastier hazing traditions is to throw cadets into the SOLDIER Showers for a roulette experience on what Soldier’s can get up to when not expected to be on their best behaviour.
Cloud, of course, isn’t spared from this fate and with his shitty luck he gets the unlikeliest SOLDIER encounter on his first try.

Bright… blue… eyes. Like a shot in the dark, they pierced into his memory, their image forever engraved into his psyche. He was shorter than average and almost slender; completely unassuming. He was a beat cop, a rookie, it was obvious from the way he had stumbled and chased him without calling anything in. Too eager perhaps to prove himself. But despite the way he tripped over his feet in those not yet filled in shoes, he had almost caught him.
Where Cloud is a beat cop and Sephiroth is the psychopath that kidnaps him. I think we all know where this is going.
