You rush to your one and only safe haven, the bedding askew but welcoming as you dart beneath it, nor caring when harsh blades poke into your face as you try to burrow deeper and further into a false sense of safety.
But this safe place is safe no more, it would appear.
When you open your eyes, you see something from beyond your pane of glass. Something close; neighbouring and near.
A creature stares back at you from their own plastic box.
Something that makes you stare.
It isn’t anything like mother, or your brothers and siblings.
It doesn’t look warm like she did, or how you feel when you tuck in close.
It’s hairless, and a colour you’ve never seen before.
It hasn’t got any floppy ears to hide behind, so when it looks at you, it looks at you.

It’d been a harsh winter, as it always was when you were living underground in a cold and damper sewer with four growing young boys — their usual quick on-the-go meal of algae and worms usually wasn’t as accessible when places where said algae and worms often lived were frosted over, so Splinter usually had to rely on what food banks and leftovers he could forage and find.
Which, in the winter when you were living in a city that was crowded with people hungry like his family was, struggling like he was.

He looks up once, and despite Leo’s best efforts to look as normal as possible, Raph only quirks his brow ridge once, and asks him flatly,
“What’s in your coat?”
Leo shuffles, like it’ll somehow make it less obvious that he was hiding something with his arm stuffed into his jacket.
“Nothing,” he answers him.
And it’s that moment, that the helpless little kitten curled up in his palm yowls rather loudly — an impressive feat for a such a small creature.
Raph gets up at the sound of that, just as also hurries into the room, gunning for his own bed.
“You can’t tell dad,” Leo warns him as he carefully removes the animal from inside his coat.
It’s a tiny little thing, pathetic looking and shivering now it wasn’t happily curled up against Leo’s chest.
It’s once-white fur is matted and long, and it’s eyes, green and bleary and wet, are round where it looks up, flickering vision between both turtles.
“Shit. Where the hell did you find that, Leo?”

Raph doesn’t like yelling, and he doesn’t want to let go of Mikey’s hand to cover his ears, so he just hurries them faster past the scene as it begins to escalate, more shouting, heavier, ruder words being spat and a few passerbys joining in, seemingly just for the fun of it, adding fuel to the fire, as their Pops would say.
Except things go from bad to worse. They manage to escape the argument by hurrying along the street, poor little Mikey barely managing to keep up where he was pulled along, when there’s more noise.
Street performers, blocking the path, angering more and more people as they attempt to shove past.
Someone knocks into Raph; a flurry of Bloomingdale’s and Macy’s bags whiz by his head, dazing him for a second before he realises at some point during the kurfuffle, he’d let go of Mikey’s hand.
He whips around, as fast as a bullet only to find he wasn’t there, beside him nor behind him.
Raph’s heart pounds in the back of his throat — zero time for escalation, this was panic at its finest, here, fast and furious.

“We’re about eight-hundred years out.”
Raph balks, almost losing his footing entirely, though it feels as if his stomach does most of the hurtling towards the ground without him.
“In the past?!” The wind carries his voice as it dances past them, and Donnie aggressively shushes him with a frantic and angered flap of his free hand.
“Oh. Oh I’m gonna kill Renet. I’m gonna hog tie her, trail her up the Bloomberg and then launch her butt off of it.”
Donatello, whom had since endured his entire life so far to hearing such far fetched, angered fuelled, petty threats, took less notice of this one as he did with most of them.

Summary
Leo blinks as the words filter through his brain. “Wait, did you… steal Donnie’s wallet? Michael. I’m so proud.”
“Noooooo!” Mikey snickers, like a liar. “He just leaves stacks of bills around his lab sometimes! And Dad’s always telling him to clean up, yeah? I’m just doing my brotherly duty and lending a hand!”
Leo cackles, using his free hand to scrub the top of Mikey’s head in an adjusted noogie. “You are completely in the right and don’t let anyone tell you otherwise. Now, help me finish this so I don’t get a cramp, and we can be on our way, yeah?” Smooth as anything, he tears the donut in two, making sure to hold the half with more cream out towards his brother.
Mikey’s smile fades a bit, but bolsters a second later. And when he reaches out to take the offered half-donut, something anxious and fluttering in Leo’s chest settles.
Or: just because you love someone doesn’t mean you understand them.
