You met him in a bar. Or a park. Or a diner where you worked. Or a library you were studying in. Or on the bus route back to your apartment. Or in the frozen aisle of a grocery store. The location doesn’t matter, but you know that you know him. That’s all you need to know.
He smiles at you, and you smile back. He’s nice to look at, in the way that shards of stained glass are nice to look at. In the way that car crashes are captivating, in the way that a tree can be both dead and alive at once, in the way that homes disappear one room at a time.

Briefly, Dean wants to scream because he knows the difference between a moat and a levy, he knows why he wants the rice, and he knows that Sammy will never understand because that’s why he did everything he did, dammit, so that Sammy wouldn’t want to hoard rice. But it’s easier, safer to let Sammy think that there’s nothing serious or weak about him. He's worked too long and too hard at molding this rendition of himself to give it up now. To reabsorb the girlish tendencies he’s been purging out of the shell he occupies.

Benny stares for a second, mouth a little open, chest rising fast. And then he lunges at him. Dean takes a step back instinctively, and another, until he feels his back hit a tree. He braces himself for the harsh sting of teeth in his neck, but Benny doesn't bare his teeth. He doesn't go for the neck at all. Instead, he goes straight for Dean's mouth.

“Could you please relax, I know how to drive in a city,” Cas lies, and Dean keeps his eyes closed so he doesn’t have to see Cas get his baby into a fender-bender.
At least until Cas starts singing along to the radio under his breath, and then Dean can’t help but stare at him, late summer sunshine dancing across his face as he dutifully keeps his hands textbook-9-and-3-o’clock positions on the steering wheel and stomps way too friggin hard on the breaks.
Cas tilts his head and gives him a questioning look, so Dean grunts, “Eyes on the road, dumbass,” and tries to only watch Cas surreptitiously through the corner of his eye. An angel of the dickhead-previous-lord, untethered and fully mortal, back from the dead and happily playing chauffeur for him, and all Dean can do is bark at him. Literally there’s no reason for Cas to still be sticking around, but fuck it, here the guy is.

Summary
It’s September of 2005, and Dean Winchester, in an attempt to outrun old mistakes and painful memories, finds himself in southern Kentucky on a wild goose chase. He’s completely certain this weird religious movement he’s “investigating” is a hoax, despite the miraculous healings people report, and he’ll be back on the road in a day or two. Things are looking up when he meets Cas, an awkward (and gorgeous) graduate student who’s actually doing honest-to-god research into the local tent revival meetings. When that research takes a weird and personal turn, Dean’s left to face two very serious realities: one, this may be a real case after all, and two, he’s fallen way harder for Cas than he should ever have let himself.
