The Commissioner embodies the word. There are tight wrinkles by his eyes and dour lines around his mouth. Strong swathes of grey cut through his hair.

Summary
Every family has their piece of folklore and Kent's family had one about crossroad deals and the dead brought back to life.
When Kent finds Jack on the floor of a bathroom the night before the draft, it is too late to call an ambulance. But Kent has a pocket knife, a chant passed down in family lore, and voice to make deal with whatever answered his pleas.

Wade blinks. “And you’re gonna do that… how, exactly?”
“Tt.” He gets the impression the kid's rolling his eyes behind the domino mask. “By saving your life in return, of course. How else? It shouldn’t be difficult, considering your complete and utter disregard for your own health and safety—“

“—also, where do you keep your cat food? Her bowl is empty, and that is unacceptable.”
Wade drops his head on to the coffee table with a resounding thunk, "What even is my life--"
