Summary
“Why was Dr Mohan removing the mushrooms from your meal?” Emery challenges, enjoying the way he cautiously lowers his fork. The admission of guilt that it is. “Last I checked you had no allergies.” (As if the food wouldn’t still be contaminated but that’s not the point)
He scoffed, rolling his eyes with fond amusement.
“Samira loves mushrooms and she knows I hate them.” Emery could swear there was a soft smile on his face. “She keeps stealing them from my meals.”
Oh this man was so fucked.

Summary
Yes, Mrs. Titus Danforth is beautiful. Lesser women pay thousands to have their faces sliced open or scalps burned with bleach to look a fraction as lovely as she does. He reminds her of this when they're alone and he can take his time admiring her. Watches from the edge of the bed as she brushes her silken blonde hair or goes through her skin care routine at the vanity. Even without the Devil's favor, being Mr. Le Bail's best girl, she doesn't have to go under the knife and shed blood for beauty. But she pays in other ways.

Summary
“What do you mean he’s making a scary sound?” Taken aback by Jack’s slightly high pitched voice, Samira walks around the patio trying to find a quiet spot.
“Imagine you’re trying to start an old car but the engine won’t budge. That kind of sound. What should I do? He has food and wat-” Before he can continue, Jack is abruptly cut off by Samira’s giggle.
“Oh my god… that’s purring. Your cat is purring. That means he’s happy and he feels safe. I refuse to believe that Dr. Jack Abbot does not know what purring is like”. Under any and all circumstances, Samira should not be laughing at her attending. Samira should not be implying that someone with the level of education and knowledge of Jack Abbot should one hundred percent know what a cat purring sounds like. But Samira Mohan is tipsy and her laughter feels the most real it has been in months.

She very quickly realizes that the card on file, marked Default, is not her card. She can’t quite understand how that’s possible. She’d been ordering food with no problems for a while, there hadn’t been any issues with payment.
The memory pops into her head randomly; a flash of Dr. Abbot’s hand shooting out, offering her phone back to her. Oh shit. Oh shit.
or: Jack just wants to take care of Samira.

Summary
“And listen,” he continues, and she can watch the part of his brain prone to nervous rambling switch on. “I know the popular opinion is against my general sanity but—I swear to god, I wanna marry you Samira Mohan. And you can say no, and I’m still gonna spend the rest of my life in love with you.”
“Until your other leg falls off,” she repeats, a little distantly.
Jack nods solemnly. “The chance is slim but never zero.”

Summary
Jack didn’t go in much for praying anymore. No point, not when nobody upstairs seemed to give a shit either way. Praying was for altar boys and little kids and people who wanted their football team to win the Superbowl; for parents in his ER who refused medical care for their dying children in favor of speaking in tongues and yelling up the ladder to something that didn’t answer. Not for him. He believed in only a few things, and none of those were anything big enough to pray to.
Well, almost none. There’d been one thing. A person, really. Bigger than a person, though. More like a grand, orchestral concept, a hope half-divine, fifty-two percent of the reason he kept showing up to work for four years straight.

Summary
“Dr. Abbot is not working today. He is not your attending,” Robby said, words clipped, low and harsh. His eyes bulged, bloodshot. “And it never occurred to you that Abbot only said that because he wants to sleep with you?”
Samira opened her mouth to respond, the synapses in her brain mid-fire as she paused to process Robby’s words.

Summary
As he keeps staring, he notices that there’s something off about the way Samira is breathing—almost like she’s having another panic attack. He starts forward in alarm, his vision focusing, sharpening.
From what he can see, her breath is coming in small pants, her head thrown back against the pillow, her mouth making small movements Robby supposes are cries for help. “Dammit, Jack, where the fuck are you?” he says aloud desperately, about to turn around and run down the hallway and pound on the door himself, when he catches a glimpse of exactly where Jack is and realizes he’s gotten it all wrong.

Summary
Samira’s embarrassed to say but she’s so busy imagining all the ways she was going to lord her victory over Jack (starting off first by smothering his face between her thighs) that she doesn’t notice anything out of the ordinary until it’s too late. All she knows is that one second she’s walking past a dense thicket of foliage and the next, something is wrapping around her ankle and pulling.
The breath is knocked from her lungs as she lands on her back, blinking up at the dusky sky in a daze.
“Hey, sweetheart.” Jack appears in her sight line, looking all too pleased with himself. “You did a lot better than I thought you would.”

“What the hell are you doing here?” Abbot asked. He nodded for her to continue walking
“A physician walking into a hospital just before shift change,” She watched as a grin spread across his face. “It’s a riddle no one has been able to crack.”
“You’re finally working nights?”
“I switched with Ellis,” She said. “So, you’re stuck with me for the next three days.” Her steps faltered. “Finally?”
“Are you serious? I’ve been trying to poach you from day shift since PittFest.”
“Really?”
“Really.” His response was almost instant. “You were incredible. The IO borehole, the pigtail catheter; I’m going to be talking about that for the rest of my life. Of course I want you for night shift.”

Summary
When Collins pulls Mohan to the side and warns her about her new relationship with Jack, Samira tries to brush it off...mostly because there is no relationship between her and Dr. Abbot? It's strictly professional...she thinks. Sort of. Maybe not.
❍❍❍
“I‒I didn’t reject you,” She forces out. She watches as the words sink in, his eyes trained on her, probably feeling a number of things but conveying none of it. Then he takes a deep breath and she swallows hard. Finally, he turns away from the edge of the roof to face her completely.
“Are you only saying that because you think I’m gonna jump or…?”
She blinks, surprised. In all honesty, she’d kind of forgotten about that part.

Summary
When he boards the elevator he’s upset. By the time he leaves the elevator he’s angry, each reverberation of his feet hitting asphalt felt in the remaining bones and surgical grade titanium in his right leg, all the way up to his hip. It takes him less than sixty seconds to walk from the parking deck to the ambulance bay. Ten feet from the entrance, he sees Robby walk through the first set of doors, past Ahmad, and then through the second set of doors. His pulse roars in his ears, his heart pounding in his chest. For the first time in years, Jack Abbot feels something approximating rage, an emotion he has long assumed to be medicated out of him.
His hands furl into fists.

Summary
Jack Abbot was no stranger to the feeling of knuckles connecting with a mandible. He'd thrown enough punches as an unruly youth to know exactly how hard to jab to do the damage warranted.
Still, as his fist connected with the angled bone of Robby's jaw, a feeling of profound relief spread through his own body. Apparently, he'd been winding up to this for longer than he consciously knew.
