“N—No! Ming-Xiong stay! Ming-Xiong!” The drunk God stammered out. He Xuan was slightly taken aback by The God’s sudden protest. Though, Shi Qingxuan always begged The Ghost to stay the night. “No, Qingxuan.” He Xuan tried to refuse—but The God yanked him back into the room.
“mm..Ming-Xiong..” He murmured. “Don’t leave—I’m lonely!” He Xuan rolled his eyes and said coldly: “That isn’t my problem.” The God whined and threw himself onto the bed. “It is! You’re my—Best friend! Please, Ming-Xiong?” He said, turning his head to face The Ghost. “I’m not your best friend.” He Xuan mumbled, almost inaudible. “If you’re lonely, get your brother to stay.” He scoffed. The Ghost tried to leave again—but was stopped by the sound of muffled sobs.

The first time He Xuan sees her, she’s standing at the edge of the forest. She’s wearing nothing but a thin, pale green dress that hangs off her shoulders and brushes against her knees. From her bedroom window, He Xuan can’t see much else besides her brown hair, dancing in the autumn breeze, and her bare feet standing on the fallen leaves.
He Xuan blinks once, and she’s gone. She chalks the girl up to a hallucination, or a dream, or something of the sort—and forgets about her entirely.

Several people nearby turned to look. Hua Cheng ignored them.
“I was here with my best friends!” Xie Lian continued, voice full of deep, existential grief. He threw his arms out, nearly hitting a random guy who ducked out of the way just in time. “My best friends who I have suffered with! Who I have bled with!”
Hua Cheng blinked. “Bled—”
“And you know what?” Xie Lian’s voice cracked, tears welling in his eyes. “I caught them MAKING OUT WITH EACH OTHER.”
Hua Cheng, who had absolutely not expected that, let out a startled laugh. “Oh?”
“Oh?” Xie Lian sobbed. “Oh, he says! My two best friends betrayed me in the nastiest way possible! I had to sit by myself and eat the cupcakes I brought for them—” his voice broke completely “—by myself.”
Xie Lian gets drunk, rides Hua Cheng (literally and figuratively), interrupts his roommates’ rendezvous, and wakes up with the worst hangover—and Hua Cheng’s number in his pocket. What the hell happened last night?

He Xuan didn’t think telling the truth would hurt in this situation. Some of his clients didn’t want to be named, and targets didn’t need to know who was coming after them. But this situation wasn’t like that, so he said, “your brother. All he wants is for you to come home.”
Instead of understanding, Shi Qingxuan’s face pinched in an uncomfortable anger. She had the kind of angelic features that He Xuan only saw in paintings, usually, so the anger really didn’t suit her. The gun raised enough that the barrel was pointed right at his forehead. “Liar,” she hissed. “Who hired you?!”
“I’m not-”
“So help me! I’ll shoot you if you don’t tell me the truth!”

It had started with a prayer.
One of many, floating from the mortals below to the glittering heavens. In the age of reason, so few people prayed. They may give their offerings and pay lip service, but Gods were privy to the truth of their hearts, and many had lost the faith in prayers and in their Gods. Though they reigned, Shi Qingxuan knew all they had was held in a tenuous grasp.
It was so easy to be forgotten. Whenever a prayer reached her ears, Shi Qingxuan was quick to throw herself into work. However, this prayer had led her to something she would have never expected.
To touch down in a field of unchecked growth was already strange in the modern world; stranger still was the verdant vines growing on what was once developed land. The people who had built here had clearly fled the encroaching wilderness. Roping vines covered buildings, and smartly red flowers budded from the ground. When Shi Qingxuan had touched one, its petals had reshaped into the form of a slim, nude woman. A syrupy finger had traced her lips before Ming Yi had pulled her away. Then, she had lifted them into the air on a summoned breeze and deposited them here.

The woman gently clutched something in her arms. A baby wrapped in white silk was looking up curiously from there, and let out a soft coo, at the melody.Sleep, my darling, safe and sound
For in this river all is foundShi Qingxuan smiled sweetly at the baby, those yellow eyes shining brightly in the early evening. A strand of black hair fell over the baby’s forehead, and her mother delicately moved it away. With a slow movement, she got down from her rock and started walking, her bare feet leaving marks on the sand with every step, getting constantly wet from the docile waves.
