Time travel is a fickle thing. The Avengers accidently let Loki escape in one of the timelines though they leave that for the native Avengers to deal with. With the tesseract in hand, Loki makes and impulse request and finds himself in front of a Pet Shop. Having no where else to go, he hides among the Midgardian creatures. He never expected this path to end with him learning what he had been missing about the word 'Family.'
Peter Parker was allowed to pick one animal to take home as a new friend. Out of all the animals, it was the pitch black, green eyed snake that caught his eye. Imagine his amazement when he got home to find out it could talk.

Odin tries to strip Loki of his aesir form as punishment for what he did in New York, but it backfires and Loki is transformed into a full-sized Jotun and gets away.
When Thor tries to go after him, he is told by Odin that Loki was 'consumed' by a frost giant, which the god of thunder takes LITERALLY.
A very awkward misunderstanding is on its way...
Thor might have to be careful, lest he gets eaten for real by his brother! He wouldn't do that, would he? Maybe he would.

Summary
All things considered, it stands to reason that Loki really isn't fond of the concept of his alleged "birthday"-- nor is he fond of Thor's attempts to draw attention to the quickly approaching date.
Unfortunately, Thor doesn't quite catch onto this fact until some damage has already been done, leaving the both of them feeling irritated and a little miserable.
Of course, most of that misery is self-inflicted, and could be resolved through a bit of open communication instigated by either party.
When, however, have things ever been that easy?

After his time spent within the Void, on Sanctuary, in Asgard's dungeons, and during the subsequent years following disguised as Odin, keeping himself carefully distant from everyone, it's only natural that Loki has come to both fear and crave the closeness of others.
Unfortunately for him, the enforced confinement of the Statesman only serves to aggravate this fact.
A fact that, of course, does not escape Thor's attention.

Summary
Post Avengers. To appease the Jötnar King for what Loki did to their realm, Odin punishes Loki by taking his magic, humiliating him before the court, and forcing Loki back into his Jötunn body – not realizing and not caring that his punishment might have fatal consequences. As Loki descends into despair and madness, tormented by vivid memories of his time in Thanos's hands, all appears hopeless. But Loki is not entirely without options - even if at first they are not apparent.
“I feared for her,” Thor started, then set his mouth shut.
And suddenly Loki saw – Thor’s protective arms around Mother; Thor’s glared defiance at Odin. He swallowed, and now his throat felt like it was filled with cracked glass. “He would have hurt Mother,” he whispered.
Thor went still. Then he let go of Loki’s shoulders and stepped back. Neither said a word. A moment passed. Another. Loki had thought he had seen every expression Thor’s face was capable of making, but he had never seen that expression on Thor’s face before – a gut-deep, mortally wounded betrayal. Not even in their confrontation on that Midgard mountain, nor on the Man of Iron’s Tower.
Nor, he knew, was that expression directed at him.

If asked, Thor would readily and confidently inform anyone that he and Loki had come a significantly long way since their falling out, and subsequent reunion following the final battle for Asgard...
That being said, nothing could have quite prepared him for the sight of Loki sat on the floor directly in the middle of the kitchen, knees drawn to his chest and face hidden entirely behind his firmly crossed arms.
(Epilogue to i couldn't change (though i wanted to);. Alternatively; Loki shifts for the first time in months, following a particularly debilitating bout of panic, and Thor is left with little option but to simply let Loki know that he's there for him.
Luckily, he does not have to do so alone).
