Summary
Copley makes his way into the plane behind Keane, greeted by an incredibly sarcastic “ah, there he is! The man of the hour!” from Joe.
“My heart,” Nicky says, pulling Joe’s attention back to him, “what do you want to watch? There are so many channels on this TV, I don’t know why anyone would need so many.” The man is frowning at the television like it’s also betrayed and captured him and is about to deliver him to scientific experimentation, and Copley finds himself mildly impressed by how nonchalant they’re acting about this whole thing.
“Oh, is the football still on?” Joe asks. “It was early in the first half when we were so rudely interrupted, I think there should be some time left in the second half.”
“Let me see,” Nicky responds, flipping rapidly through the stations.

Summary
The last time di Genova and al-Kaysani met on the pitch, it infamously ended with a red card for al-Kaysani and a media firestorm for di Genova. “Will you be able to work together?”

Joe sways closer, eyes dropping to Nicky’s lips like he can’t help it. Still, there’s a very cute rumple in his brow, eyes all earnestly concerned as he says, very serious, all of the sudden, “Nicky, if it’s not already clear that I will honour any boundary you set-
“Okay,” Nicky pulls Joe’s face unceremoniously down to his and pants out between hungry, wet, toe-curling kisses, “stop being so respectful. It’s turning me on.”

Summary
As with anything, Nicky's first thought upon the flash-bang-hiss of the grenade is of Joe.
Joe, who's been watching football for the last hour on the staticky TV next to Booker without his noise-reducing earplugs in. Joe, who's been doing so well even in the uprooting aftermath of Sudan and a new family member, grounded and calm at his center from a year of Nicky's careful guidance, his senses free and joyful, his focus steady.
Joe, who Nicky loves.
Joe, who is currently pushed face down on the stone floor, eyes wide and frightened, an armoured knee on the back of his neck as he gasps and his mouth moves silently and he loses consciousness to the throat-stinging gas swirling around them.

Back in college Joe and his friends used to joke about selling out, finding rich patrons and being paid obscene amounts of money to paint pretentious abstract pieces. Ten years later, Joe's the only one who actually did it. Finding himself with more money than he'll ever need, an utter lack of passion for his craft and no friends left in the city, he runs away to a tiny town on the coast to try and rediscover whatever it is he lost of himself along the way. Luckily for him, the overly friendly manager of the motel he's living in and said overly friendly manager's two year old son are all too eager to help him out.

Nicky rolled over in Joe’s loose grip on a quiet Saturday morning and relished the ability to watch his husband sleep. Sure, this exact scene had played out hundreds of times over the course of their relationship, but it had been unusually rare for the last few months, and he missed it. As Nicky debated the best way to sneak out of Joe’s arms and leave him to rest a bit longer, their bedroom door burst open.
“Daddy! Baba!” Amira ran over to their bed and climbed up, knobby knees and elbows digging into Nicky as she wedged herself between her fathers.
Joe, Nicky, and their young daughter attempt to have a relaxing Saturday. Attempt being the key word.

Giving up homosexuality. It'll be a funny story. I can tell it to the artist who gives me my first tattoo, which will be something very tasteful, somewhere that is not on my ass."
"That's the spirit." She gets up and walks over to the fridge, in search of a midnight snack, no doubt. "Now, I'd offer you a bowl of Fruit-Loops, but we wouldn't want to break the rules so soon, because they're- y'know. Fruity."
He snags the closest thing he can reach, a dirty converse sneaker, and lobs it vaguely in the direction of her shins, trying and failing not to laugh with her. "Fuck off. Lent doesn't start until tomorrow."
Or: In which Andy is a troll, Nicky is gay (but not for Lent), Joe is confused but crushing hard nonetheless, and it's going to be a long six weeks for everybody involved.

Joe could sleep in for another hour and take the express train, but he’d rather sit for a longer, quieter commute than stand in a packed carriage.

Summary
In another world, where they are not friends, where they had never shared hearty meals and late night calls, had never witnessed each other struggle with the grief and indignity of injuries, Joe would have crowed at his failed attempts, he would probably be making a crude remark about how the fault lies in Nicky's shapely ass, which Joe is sure has won Nicky most of his sponsorshipsBut in this world, after those few months of rehab together in Monaco and the lockdown in Tokyo and everything else in between, Joe is genuinely devastated for him.
They are still at a stalemate. The battle is not over yet. They still need to outperform each other.
But astaghfirullah he is tired. And he can see that Nicky is too when Joe catches Nicky's eyes as he picks himself up from the crash mat. Nicky gives him that little shrug and his signature, almost imperceptible half smile.
So Joe asks the official.
"Can we have two golds?"
