'Which is?' Arthur demanded, raising his eyebrows.
Gaius sighed, casting a tired, apologetic look in Merlin's direction. 'If the target of a love spell is already truly, deeply devoted to someone – if they love another without question or pause – then no spell can take hold.'
'You're saying that it didn't work because Merlin already loves someone?' The words felt thin between his lips, straining to get past the sudden, leaden feeling in his chest. It felt like someone had plunged their hand inside him and caught his heart in the cage of their fist, and Arthur was left breathless as he tried to speak around the awful sensation.

Summary
He watched Arthur through drooping lashes, admiring the way the firelight played across his skin and struck sunlight through his hair. The sleep tunic he wore was hardly the sturdiest garment. It clung to his shoulders and hung open at the laces, revealing strong collar bones and the golden hair that gleamed, downy, upon Arthur's chest. It was nothing Merlin hadn't seen before when he helped Arthur with his bath, and yet there was something almost coy about the sight: artless and appealing.
Arthur may be a prat sometimes, but he shows he cares in the little things.

He was shaking so much his body ached, he couldn’t feel his fingers or toes.

Arthur stared at him, incredulous.
“Where’s your jacket?”

“I gave it to Claire. She needed it more”
Now Arthur was looking at him with exasperation and disbelief. Merlin shifted, uncomfortable, and pointed a shaking finger at the dinner tray.
“Your food will get cold, s-sire”
Arthur continued to stare at him, eyes widening.

“Yes, sire?” chirped Merlin as he looked up from where he was cleaning the floor, appearing much too pleased for the distraction. The title didn’t even hold an ounce of teasing or distaste. Arthur’s heart skipped.

"I think you're the only one who really knows me," Arthur whispered into the silence of the night, snuggled closely to Merlin in the large bed. Merlin stayed quiet for a moment, before letting out a sigh and pressing himself closer into Arthur's arms as they laid on their sides facing each other.
"I don't know what it is about you that makes me want to be so open and honest," he continued, holding Merlin close. "It's almost unbelievable how you've been able to walk into my life and just... Take it over. Yet, you did, and I—"
"Arthur," Merlin groaned, his voice muffled by Arthur's chest. Arthur stopped talking, and glanced around at where Merlin had scooted down to press his face into his chest.
He hesitated. "...Yes?"
"Vows are meant to be spoken at the altar," he mumbled, audibly tired, "Not in bed the night before wedding when your betrothed is trying to sleep."
Or
Merlin and Arthur are finally getting married. Only, Arthur can't seem to get to sleep the night before the wedding. Luckily, no matter how tired, he has Merlin to ease his nerves.
