The stories in this sub-series can all be read as canon compliant. In the parent series, Faramir is Aragorn's son, but as no one knows that until Faramir finds out at the start of the Fourth Age, you can read the the stories in this sub-series as if Faramir is Denethor's son.

As more background, in the first year of the First Age, Faramir learns that his mother Finduilas, desperate for a second child her husband was unwilling to give her due to her delicate health, drugged her friend Thorongil and stole a child from him. The stories taking place after that point are being reorganized into the "Desperation's Gift" series.
