The winds are the souls of the restless dead, not here, not there, sleeping but not awake. It is the ultimate gift, and the ultimate punishment. Winds are ghosts, and the souls of the restless dead ride among them forever.
(Sometimes, the wind dies, or blows itself to pieces. I need not tell you what happens then.)**A sequel, of sorts, to my other work, a whisper in the breeze (it's quiet, but it's there), furthering the story and adding to it. Can be read as a standalone.**

Summary
“Merlin,” Gwen whispers, like they are children awake far after they’re meant to be, “what happened?”
“I tripped,” he slurs, too tired to be bothered making coherent, functional sentences.
“Really? Because that cut of yours looks far too cleanly made to have been some root.” So, she’s figured him out. Gwen’s talented like that.
“Yep, you’re right. It was the axe-murderer that lives in the woods.” Gwen chokes out a laugh.
“The what?”
“Axe-murderer. Was an axe-murderer, anyway. I took care of him.”
“How?” Merlin wiggles his fingers in response.
“Magic.”
“Oh. I see.” There’s a pause, and Merlin almost goes back to sleep, but then Gwen says, quietly,
“Are you serious?”
“Deadly. Deadlier than an axe-murderer.” He giggles at his profound wit and humour, and Gwen just makes that breathy sigh-laugh sound again.Series

"You--" he broke off, wheezing faintly, and that hope began to dawn in Merlin's heart once again. "You know exactly what this means to me. I mean, even for you, Emrys, this is low." He settled back onto his haunches, a sharp, cruel light that Merlin recognised entering his gaze, the prelude to some terrible gotcha. "When did you decide that you were okay with chipping your humanity away, piece by piece? When did you stop being kind?"
"Oh, I don't know," Merlin drawled, swallowing down the little burrs of guilt that threatened to catch in his throat and stick painfully. This was not the gotcha that Mordred thought it was going to be. Well, actually it was, but Merlin had an even bigger gotcha, which cancelled Mordred's out. "I think it was around the time you killed my best friend."
