Arthur is dead because Merlin has failed. Merlin’s plagued by guilt and the feeling of general worthlessness when a stranger god starts him on a journey to achieve the correct ending.
After an aeon and a half, coming into his proper power as Emrys, an idyllic universe he misses dearly, and a lifetime spent in the modern era, he says scratch that. He’s gonna talk to his mum, fall platonically (yet madly) in love with his mortal enemies, all the while discreetly guiding the young and spry Merlin of this universe to not lose his mind while keeping his own Arthur alive.
There's also this bit about Arthur being Eurydice that chooses to break through the doors of the Underworld with the power of his muscular calves and various gods' love for quality gossip.

Summary
Turbulent times are approaching. Foreign invaders from without and growing animosity between the kingdoms from within threaten to plunge Albion into darkness.
An alliance between Cornwall, a kingdom abundant in magic, and Camelot, a kingdom abundant in everything but, has been underway for months and it looks like the discussions are finally coming to a close. Much to their mutual displeasure, Princess of Camelot and the Prince of Cornwall are to be married, to solidify the alliance.
However, unforeseen developments leave them with no other choice but become unlikely allies to protect their people from dangers known and unknown.
—The blonde knight, who she now recognised to be Arthur de Bois, noticed her first and signalled the other two. Coming to Camelot with a de Bois at his right hand? He was either shameless or mad. Morgana wasn’t sure which would be worse.

Summary
Sometimes, Merlin spoke the names of those they'd lost quietly into the dawn, allowing them to be caught in the soft net of the clouds and carried away on the wings of immortality with the breeze.
After abandoning Camelot for half a decade, Merlin finally returns at the request of an old friend and is met with a markedly different kingdom to the one they left behind. In the years spent away from the place they had once called home, Merlin has tried to move on from the failures in their past and sever all ties with their old life in the attempt to start afresh. Upon their return, though, they discover that some foundations cannot be so easily destroyed and find themself tethered to familiar forms by both the shadows of the dead and the promise of the future. With old Camelot on the brink of collapse, Merlin realises that perhaps they have been running from everything for a little too long and, this time, they are determined to not make the same mistakes again. After all, mortality is fragile and easily broken and sometimes it takes a death to fertilise the ground for new life. -

“Merlin,” Gwen whispers, like they are children awake far after they’re meant to be, “what happened?”
“I tripped,” he slurs, to tired to be bothered making coherent, functional sentences.
“Really? Because that cut of yours looks far too cleanly made to have been some root.” So, she’s figured him out. Gwen’s talented like that.
“Yep, you’re right. It was the axe-murderer that lives in the woods.” Gwen chokes out a laugh.
“The what?”
“Axe-murderer. Was an axe-murderer, anyway. I took care of him.”
“How?” Merlin wiggles his fingers in response.
“Magic.”
“Oh. I see.” There’s a pause, and Merlin almost goes back to sleep, but then Gwen says, quietly,
“Are you serious?”
“Deadly. Deadlier than an axe-murderer.” He giggles at his profound wit and humour, and Gwen just makes that breathy sigh-laugh sound again.Series

Everyone has a breaking point, and Morgana has always known all too well how to find each and every one of Gwen's.
The enchantment Morgana tries to weave in the dark tower does not work as intended, not entirely. It's in the aftermath, though, that Gwen has to make a row of hard choices; where she has to decide for herself what she wants and what she needs. It's not easy, and they might not end up being the right decisions, but for once they are all hers and maybe that's all that matters.
A story of grief, rage, (the absence of) forgiveness, and loving someone who is still alive but does not exist anymore. Of maybe taking a wrong turn that leads to the right destination.
