And in the beginning, they had - her voice had carried warmth, the conversation occasionally straying to details that had nothing to do with her targets. But lately, all he heard from her was the hunt: nothing of her.

The breeze rolling in from the open window of Rook's flat in Dock Town smelled of brine and smoke, the calls of merchants and gulls rising into the air as Neve hauled the last crate onto the worn wooden table in the kitchen area. The place was modest by Minrathian standards. The walls were bare and the floorboards creaked, but there was a window that looked out on the bustling canal. Rook didn't mind. It felt like a foothold for her.
“You know,” Neve said, brushing dust from her hands as she moved around the table, “most people don’t celebrate surviving the literal end of the world by moving into a half-rotted flat in Dock Town.”
Bellara sat on the other side of the table, digging through the crates they'd brought in earlier to unpack things, and looked up as Neve spoke, a brow. “Rook's never been most people,” she added with a light laugh.
Rook smirked faintly, tucking a lock of bright red hair behind her ear as she crossed the room and raised a shoulder. “Eh, it's not the Lighthouse, but it'll do.

She traces the runes with a blunted nail. “Why not eradicate the parts of our past that hurt? That were not ours to control?”
Viago scoffs, almost. There is something halfhearted about it, like he wants to refute what she says, but only gets part of the way there. It doesn’t matter— she’s already picked apart the pieces of any argument he might make.
Years before the Dread Wolf aims to take down the Veil, Teia recruits a thief (an elf, a mage, a spark) from the gutters of Salle—and gets exactly what she bargained for.

Three months had passed since the fall of Elgar’nan, yet the echoes of that day still lived in Rook’s bones. The world had steadied, the Veil was sealed, and her companions had all gone their separate ways: Davrin was back in Weisshaupt helping Evka and the Wardens rebuild, Neve left to secure Minrathous with what was left of the Shadow Dragons and the Threads, and Lucanis had gone back to Antiva to take his place as First Talon and begin reclaiming the region from under Antaam rule. Likewise, Taash had gone back to Rivain to help with recovery efforts there, and Emmrich went back to his quiet pocket within the Necropolis to begin his journey into Lichdom.
Rook, however, lingered in the Fade. The Lighthouse had become her anchor, its halls echoing with memories that she wasn't quite ready to let go of. She used the Crossroads to travel, checking in on each of them to ensure their wounds were healing and cities were rebuilding. She told herself it was duty, but Lucanis saw through it every time. She was growing restless. For as long as he'd known her, she'd been constantly on the move and now... now she had no direction at all.
