Summary
Frustration bled into Gakushuu's hollow heart and the tender yearning for victory tied its noose around his neck, crooning in the shell of his ear and taunting him. Gakushuu collapsed at his loss, E class had won and teased his perfect win out from under his chin. Toppling his win and crushed him under their jeers and he only had himself to blame in all of this.
He could only hope that the meeting to the principal's office would be easier on the tender wound of his warm, beating soul. Afterall, his pride had only swallowed itself. Rubbing salt into his bleeding heart would make this experience so much worse.

But I’m telling you, if you want to live, if you want to find out what it would be like if you managed to find a way to breathe for once, then,”
The elevator dings. The door opens wide, like it’s ready to swallow whatever’s thrown at it.
“Then live, Gakushu. This time it’ll be different.”
The man pushes Gakushu into the open. He’s blinded by the pure brightness of his surroundings, but he manages to get one more question out.
“What do you mean it’ll be different? You really think my father will change? That I can change?”
He’s shouting, because he feels so far away, but winces when he feels the voice of the man so close by. It’s tickling the edge of his ear, almost like a melancholic summer song that got lost by the ocean waves.
“Of course I do. But that’s not what I meant.”
The white devours Gakushu.
“You’ll see, dear Asano!”
Gakushu wakes up.
(Gakushu gets one more chance - in the form of tentacles, vampires, and a lot more happiness than he ever thought he could have).

The rest of Class 3E stares at him in shock, and he can already feel the smarmy grin of Akabane creeping onto his face. Deciding to ignore it, Gakushu smiles as politely as he can to Karasuma.

Gakushu stands up, albeit stumbling a little, and is surprised when Akabane picks him up.
“Uh- Akabane-kun, I can walk, there’s no need to.”
“Shut up.”
Gakushu stops, wondering what exactly has gotten into the other boy, but says nothing as he’s (rather embarrassingly) carried bridal style in Akabane’s arms. It makes him feel a little better when Tomohito tries to do the same for Kanzaki, and she simply just laughs him off.
Poor guy. She’s totally clueless.

The second time, it was much harder. Now that Gakushu was completely on guard to the chance of her doing a shootdown every minute or so, Gakushu’s heart was pounding so incredibly loudly against his chest and he can’t fucking focus-
Akabane is the one to hold him down, saying, “ Breathe, Asano-chan. Breathe. Nobodies going to hurt you, it’s just a machine.”

“Yeah, Okajima. Who knows, there’s so many people here who could be creepy, perverted gays or whatever.” Karma drawls, words drenched in sarcasm. Nagisa shivered. Man, Karma was scary.
Okajima flushes. “There’s no way! Only that guy, Watanuki, is weird like that. I was only makin’ fun of Asano, I know he’s not that freaky.”
Karma’s eyes flash. “You talking shit, Okajima?”
Oh. It’s getting dangerous.

“I don’t like the chairman, Nagisa.”
Nagisa raises an eyebrow. “Where’s this coming from, Karma?”
“He scares Asano-chan. He scares him so bad, and I hate seeing him like that.”

He takes one more pitiful look at Gakushu, before he strikes him across the face. Gakushu stumbles, a little disoriented, but can’t help the laughter that bubbles up and out of his throat. Gods, was he serious? His own father hit harder than this.
“That wasn’t scary at all. I suppose you’ve never hit an actual child like you mean it.” Gakushu laughs, and maybe he’s being a little delirious. Nagisa is by his side immediately, cradling his head, and Gakushu can’t help but laugh, laugh, laugh.
How fucking ridiculous.

Insead, Lovro just narrows his eyes, turning towards Gakushu. “And you. You knew I was going to attack that boy without me having moved yet. You’ve got good senses, don’t you?”
“I suppose. I’ve always…lived on eggshells, to say the least.” Gakushu manages. Lovro smiles at him.
“Is that so? Well, I like you. You move well. Even before, your shooting and knife skills are top notch for that of a middle schooler. Makes me want to take you as a student, you know?” And Gakushu, freezes a little at those words, because is that what Lovro really thought?

The teacher passes out the exams, pausing to give Asano a reassuring pat on the shoulder as she does. It seems even she can tell how exhausted he is.

A small part of Asano’s mind wants to hope that just maybe his father found out that he’s not feeling well, and wants to scold him for coming to school when he’s clearly ill before sending him home.
He knows that’s not the case.

Asano does not talk about going home.
Neither has he talked about the process of having come here, but Gakuhou extrapolates it to be from a sort of accident. “Who purposefully wants to go live with their high-school self and their father? Truly a nightmare situation.
Gakushuu accuses, “You don’t speak to him.” But they (Gakuhou, 41; Gakushuu, 15) were speaking. He sits straighter at the realization. There’s little else they would talk about, otherwise.
Gakushuu seems to have arrived at a similar conclusion. “Maybe Asa was sent here as a proxy to make us get along.”
Gakuhou wants to doubt that. Truthfully, he isn’t sure. “I believe he will find his own place and purpose here.”
