"Life isn't a movie," George said softly. "You hit a jackpot with a nice, good-looking guy, who might be a little boring but probably isn't a bad guy. Take the win, Karl."
Karl and George are best friends. They're roommates too, actually. They have a deep strong connection with each other, even when they're both seeing other people. Just friends though, right?

"Until we get an explanation, they're assholes," Karl nodded. "Three times. Punz said it, three times in the last- two weeks?"

When your soulmate bleeds, you bleed. Just the visuals. You don't get hurt, you don't feel the pain, but for a second there, you will know that they're going through, and as soon as it happens, the blood disappears.
Now, when you're a surgeon and your soulmate bleeds every time you have a trauma come in (such as a drive-by shooting and other crime-related stuff) you tend to question what the hell they're doing with their lives. And if they have some kind of involvement in the traumas.

And in the best case scenario he was monitoring them from his lab.
He was not high ranked in the field and yet irreplaceable. He made all the technology, from weapons to armour and small gadgets they used for spy work. That’s why he thought that some fully field angers should treat him with more respect.
