I'm pretty sure I will finish this before I pass away from old age, because I've been circling back to these two every eighteen months or so for a decade and I have hundreds of thousands of words down, I just keep adjusting plot points and throwing everything off. But old age is still a fair way off, so... maybe don't read unless you just love an unfinished WIP.

Alena and Cullen are unexpectedly thrown back together in the wake of the Conclave. But in the thick of war, the tangled mess of their histories is hard to reconcile.
Everybody's trauma is being laboriously worked through! Also a little plot, a little politics, a little porn. Anti-Templar Order but pretty pro-Templars; some minor canon divergence; freely tossing out the lore when it suits me.
The previous fic in this series, An Unmarked Place, sets up the preexisting relationship between Alena and Cullen. It's not too long and this probably won't make a ton of sense without it.
Will update tags as we go along and drop trigger warnings in the notes when the tough stuff comes up.

The manifesto here is for everyone to use as a reference, if you need it for your fan works.

Summary
Kirkwall is known as the “City of Chains”. Its jet black walls feel like an appropriate backdrop for a site whose history is filled with dark and bloody deeds. It is also where Theresa and Cullen have decided to make their new home, now that the Inquisition has been disbanded. Together with Cullen’s youngest sister, Rosalie – an apostate and now Theresa’s pupil – and their mabari Cal, they make a valiant attempt at settling down and starting fresh. But the past will not stay quiet, and unresolved hurts begin to fester, spreading their corruption into the present, and possibly poisoning any future they hope to build.
This is part two of an ongoing series, but I’ve done my best to make each arc work as a standalone, so feel free to start here if you like! Please take careful note of the tags. I will be including CWs at the start of relevant chapters, and will do my utmost to approach these topics with sensitivity and compassion. Take care of yourselves!

Picking up right where we left off in He Can Be Strong For Someone Else - Act 2.
Kirkwall is as hard to stomach as ever even though things have calmed down some.
All Cullen can do is the best he can. Try to uphold his duty and his conscience and straddle the gap between the two.
The thing is...lines are beginning to blur. All kinds of lines, not just between mages and templars or demons and magic.
He's still possessed, he still has nightmares, he still can't sleep. But maybe he's learning from all of this.Once again I state that I am being very fast and loose with the timeline here, so things can move and shift a bit to match up with the course of events for the story. Nothing is concrete except the scenes that have been detailed and if I come up with more scenes to add, they’ll come as new posts outside of each Act. I have thought of a few already.

This is my take on Cullin's story and his involvement on the sidelines and how his character developes over time.
Warnings will increase as the story progresses. For now, there will be plenty of gore and violence, demons, bloodmages, torture and PTSD. There will be some references to demonic non/con, but it will not be graphic.

And Wilmod showed back up and left again. Knight Captain Cullen can't let this go. When the recruit leads him to the Wounded Coast he realizes that something else is up. Something more than just wayward recruits screwing around when they should be training.

The worst thing that can happen when someone goes through a severely traumatic experience and is in recovery from it......is to backslide right back into a new break. It's an all too common experience among those with Battle Sickness.
Unfortunately, Cullen is no common soldier and what he suffers from...well...it's certainly not common Battle Sickness.
On top of all his other shit......it's just another straw on the mabari's back. He's trying so hard not to break.
