An optional tour of Ilya's home institution - Fermilab, is in the afternoon of day two of the CMB polarization workshop that Shane is attending in Chicago.
Shane Hollander, U Toronto postdoc, theoretical physicist, not someone who normally signs up for optional things, obviously signed up.
Ilya Rozanov, staff researcher in Fermilab cosmology group, workshop speaker, is the host of today's tour. This morning he parked his Ducati in the Director's spot out front and is waiting in the Wilson Hall atrium twenty minutes early.
They've spent six weeks together at the South Pole Telescope, sealing a possibly last goodbye with a handshake three seconds too long.

The Shada.
She grabs her sonic and gets to work on the control panel, making a point of not thinking about what she can't feel from the other side of the pod. Of course there's no mind there, no presence, nothing but empty silence. It's a good thing, too, because it's been years since this particular person was placed within this so-called cabinet. To be aware of it would be... horrible.
She looks... not at all like she's asleep. The Doctor has seen her sleep so many times before, and it’s never looked like this. She looks nothing like Missy.
Following the events of the Doctor Falls, Missy goes to Gallifrey in an effort to survive. There, after healing, she is sent to be held in cryogenic stasis in the Shada. At least until the Doctor finds herself in need of some help.

Anya may have died on the Tulpar, but a guilty Jimmy tucked as much of her body as would fit into the cryostasis pod alongside a mutilated Curly, delusional and guilty and hoping she might be buried properly. Twenty years later, she wakes up in a hospital to find that she's been revived from her dead brain, stuck into a cultured clone body - a technology that didn't even exist when she took her own life. She's not exactly happy about it. In some ways, her resurrection is the ultimate violation; Jimmy has taken from her even the sole sanctity of Death, has stolen her final rebellion. But there's a silver lining: Jimmy is dead, there's no more Pony Express, and despite the festering hate in her heart towards him, Curly is still her friend and still there to keep her company. Giving up now would be wasting the opportunity to carry on out of spite.
In the end, after all, life goes like this: Sometimes you grit your teeth and crawl. Sometimes you come out the other side feeling more alive than you realized you were capable of.
(No explicit or present-tense sexual violence, but this story deals heavily with Anya's past. Viewers be warned.)

The colony ship Shepherd's Horizon is the first of its kind, designed to carry the first exo-solar colonists to the distant world of New Andrastea over the course of 247 Solar years. Maxine Truwell, a young life-systems technician, is among the lucky candidates to have been chosen to depart on this journey. While she and 30,000 others sleep the decades away in cryo-stasis, a crew of 5,000 remains awake to maintain and manage the vessel, living and dying over the course of 9 generations to ensure the safety of the Sleepers and the condition of the Horizon. As the years drag on and the ship's systems degrade, a sinister fate looms over the desperate generation crew, who grow to resent the sleeping colonists they have been charged to care for.
Each colonist is briefly woken from cryo-sleep one at a time, every 25-50 years to prevent critical tissue damage that can occur from prolonged exposure to cryo-stasis. While she is usually only awake for a day at a time before being put back under, these brief periods of wakefulness are enough to give Maxwell a glimpse into the deterioration of the vessel and its crew, each awakening more uncomfortable and foreboding than the last.
