Four years after the war, Balamb Garden is still standing — but it is far from healed.
Seifer returns under impossible terms: pass the SeeD field exam and live, or fail and face execution for his crimes. Headmaster Cid assigns Zell as his instructor, forcing him to teach the boy who once terrorised him, while Xu is chosen as Seifer’s mentor — despite severe GF-related memory loss that has erased large parts of her childhood.
Elsewhere, the fractures widen. Irvine has vanished without explanation. Squall, struggling with unspoken PTSD, is expected to lead a military academy he can barely hold together. Selphie plans the Autumn Festival with relentless cheer, even as the absence of Irvine threatens to break her. Rinoa finds herself once again caught between Squall and Seifer.
Behind closed doors, Xu hides a secret relationship with Nida — one she insists must remain unseen, even as he wants more than stolen moments. Putting up with Seifer’s antagonistic bouts of unchecked emotion only pushed me to get stronger... The thought of beating that guy and wiping that smug grin off his face served as a good motivator, and he made for a good sparring partner—I wouldn’t exactly call him my “rival”, or whatever weird thing that self-described “romantic” guy called it... But Seifer’s shitty attitude made me want to train harder to make something of myself, that’s all I needed to know. I still don’t understand what his weird obsession with me is...
One time when he was being an asshole he called me an “Ice Queen”, but... Somehow that made me remember our weird joint training mission with Trabia Garden, to that isolated village in the northern snowfields... I always thought it was a fever dream brought on by hypothermia—a dying woman in a heavy fur cloak reaching out to me, a blinding snowstorm, the harsh sound of the wind... then I woke up fevered in the village inn. Her current company doesn’t use her to her full potential (according to all of her friends and family) yet still manages to overwork her. Her best friend Xu has finally had it with her ‘too busy to do anything’ lifestyle. Quistis’ goal for her work-a-holic life has always been to buy the lighthouse near the orphanage where she grew up, fix it up and turn it into a Bed and Breakfast. She wanted people to see the beauty that had come to what was left of the Centra continent. Xu has decided it’s time that came to be.

Then she’d do it, and the tree would ignite into its blinding radiance, multicolor lights refracting endlessly beneath fistfuls of tinsel. Each moving and sound-making ornament came to life at once, making a very specific and pleasant cacophony. She felt like she had some special power to summon the magic of the holiday as she plugged in the tree every day of the season—but nothing quite compared to plugging it in on Light Night.
Rinoa loved the Light Night party. But she didn’t know how to be excited about it this year, now that the most important person wouldn’t be coming.

Leon believed he had shed that life long ago when his world was destroyed and he arrived in Radiant Garden. By some miracle, or perhaps curse, he is forced back into the role of "Squall", digging up bodies that were long buried and secrets he had suppressed. The storm rolls in, a fitful burst of rain, and holding the umbrella is his cloudy companion. Chained together by fate, trapped in a world that shouldn't exist, they run together on borrowed time unsure of how to explain themselves or how to hide their truth. When the apocalypse comes, Leon is faced with a choice. To return to being "Squall" and face the storms of friends that he never fully mourned, or to keep being "Leon" and come face to face with the reality that he no longer can pretend this isn't love.
