“Silas,” she says, keeping her voice low, “he’s… he’s tearing through anyone in his way. He dropped the veil—then raised it again.”
“Hard to miss.” Kol’s eyes flick to the room, then back. His voice lowers, weighted and slow. “Rebekah slipped through while it was thin. She found me.” His throat works once, like the words scrape coming out. “Then the door slammed shut.”
The air between them stills.
Bonnie says nothing at first—perhaps sensing that anything she says might send Kol careening over the edge.
He had existed in a world without his sister for days—weeks—and hadn’t known. His brothers hadn’t called. No one had thought to tell him. He’d been laughing somewhere, reveling in his freedom, while Rebekah’s bones were turning to dust. Those boys—the ripper, the doppelganger’s brother—had lured her into that house and put a stake through her chest.
And he hadn’t known.

The words drop like a stone into water, rippling outward.
Lucien’s breath stumbles. His eyes flicker—rage trying to surface through the compulsion’s glass. “You lie,” he says, though his voice is hollow.
Kol smiles, slow and foxlike. “Do I? You should hear her. She cries out his name as if the sound itself might save her. Niklaus,” he says softly, savoring it. “Niklaus, Niklaus, Niklaus.” He leans forward as he repeats it, his tone almost affectionate, as though sharing a joke between friends. “Your lady makes a chorus of it.”
Lucien’s nostrils flare. His jaw tightens. He cannot move, but the fight is visible in his eyes—fire trapped behind glass. Kol steps closer, close enough that the boy’s breath warms his throat.
“I tell you this,” Kol says lightly, “because I think you ought to know. I believe in honesty between men. Especially before one of them becomes a gift.”
Lucien’s brows knit. “A gift?”

It isn't the classic pencil shape — it's been stained and polished, whittled to give it a thinner place to grip which gains width again at the base to stop her hand sliding when it grows slick with Alice's blood. This is a fucking professional.
Alice sighs, cursing herself as the girl steps away from the phone and towards the middle of the room. “No one's asked to use my phone in ages. I should've realised, but then it was so common for a few decades there, I didn't think…”
“Well, at least you won't have long to berate yourself for your mistake.”
“No pun intended, eh? Mis-stake?” Alice tries. The girl doesn't laugh. Well, she can suit herself — Alice thought that was quick-witted. “So, are you with the Herbert clan, the Van Helsings, or are you a freelancer?”
“The Bouchards.”

The night of the Kyuubi's attack, the Kyuubi "appeared out of nowhere." What happens when a large object suddenly becomes present? The air is shoved aside in a massive pressure wave. Massive pressure wave + infant eardrums = deaf baby. Deaf baby + miscommunication, panic, and exhaustion = no one actually knows who has the baby. Misplaced baby + growing hatred = toddler abandonment. Toddler abandonment + continuing hatred + deafness = confused child who had to make up the rules as they went.
The correlation between the actual rules and the invented rules is loose at best, but when the invented rules end up making more sense than the actual rules and the inventor is charismatic enough to get anyone to listen to him, what chaos ensues?
And once a terrible, immaterial, unfightable foe from Somewhere Else begins to claw out a foothold into their world, how can a strange child and their friends protect themselves and their precious people?
Listening to The Magnus Archives is not necessary to understand this work, but it's a really good horror podcast so I reccomend listening to it for that, if nothing else!
